Asked once before but didn't get a response so will test your memories again.

Have two different H manuals, one that shows the sediment bowl on a dual fuel machine installed on the main fuel tank, another showing it reversed and installed on the smaller starting tank.

Have seen pictures in the Pitorial History Book showing what appears to be both installations as well.

Can anyone tell me why the change or logic behind altering the location of the sediment bowl and shutoff valve?

I have an Instruction Manual for a W-4 printed 9-23-40 which was supplied with tractor number BH 2374 (1941). It shows the sediment bowl under the auxiliary tank.

In a later manual printed 11-8-46 there is a photo of the W-4 inside the cover which clearly shows the bowl under the auxiliary tank. However, further on in the starting up instructions an illustration shows it under the main fuel tank.

The Parts Manual shows there were changes made to the fuel pipes to and from the strainer at Serial No.1129.

Think the first set up was shut off under main tank with strainer and bowel under starting tank then line from strainer to carb. Then later they done the other way. I don't know why. Think Justin Webber knows a good bit about early H changes, maybe he will post.

Which manuals? My operator's and service manuals both show the bowl under the main tank. The starting tank just has a shut-off valve. My parts book indicates the same thing. If only gasoline was used, the bowl can be moved under the starting tank, and the starting tank as well as the main tank could then be used for gas and both would be filtered? I don't remember the last time I saw a functioning dist/kero-gas setup, though.

Someone told me once that the sediment bowl was under the tank for two reasons, it was a straight gas tractor or someone got tired of the belt jumping off of the belt pulley and taking out the sediment bowl.Maybe IH did it for that reason.
