Has anyone tried powder-coating front or rear rims?

How did they hold up?

Thx SKK

I have never done tractor rims but have done an assortment of other things with the powder coating. If you can get the rims in Excellent + condition before coating, you are going to be long term happy with the process. Some of the pieces that I have coated have held up good in adverse conditions. Just like any other finish they cannot and will not resist banging and abrasive treatment.

Powdercoating is one of the things I was going to look into for the rims, and maybe some other parts as well. I was told they have a "near chrome" color that is supposed to be very shiney. And Powdercoating is supposed to be the hardest paint, because of the way they put it on. So I would say it would hold up very well.

I had a Mountain Bike powder coated, and it very chipped after much abuse. A friend had the frame of his 4x4 powder coated. I'm sure it held up fine.

I found out that powder coating and farm equipment don't mix. After a little while out in the real world, the powder coating loosens up from the metal and then tears off in sheets.

If the coating is coming off in sheets, either the surface wasn't properly prep'ed or the powder wasn't properly cured, probably the prep.

No, that is not 100% correct, a lot of lawn mower decks are powder coated, and the paint will come off in sheets. What causes thsi happen in this application is when people fertilize their yard, then mulch, they do not clean their deck, the nitrogen and grass will build a lot of heat and will casue the power coating to start popping off. This has nothing to with prep or curing, it is just the downside of powder coat. Powder coat is for more pretty than function. there are a lot of paints on the market that will hold up better than powder coat for durability.

I haven't been looking at the under side of any K-Mart mowers. I would guess lack of prep is the problem there too. The right powder, properly applied will outlast virtually any wet paint.
