hydraulic couplers

It's been too long for me to remember this stuff- The rear couplers on my W560D say "safeway" on them, and have a ball seal. The plow I just bought has couplers that won't fit, but I have a set of IH male with pointed seals that plug in ok. Will these work? Thanks for your help.

safeway and pioneer will interchage and work together. I'm useing them on a M and taylorway disk.

Thanks, guys. I think the best bet is to replace both sides with new. The plow is the only thing that will be hooked up, so cost won't be too bad. I'll hit the Farm & Fleet this week.

toolz: I think just about any quick couplers that will plug into and match each other will work. Like you, I forget the details, but remember getting into some quick couplers that wouldn't work with the couplers on my 560 and 656 back in the late 60s. Some had point while others had a ball, some wouldn't plug in and seal, while others would plug in and seal, if you lowered a heavy implement quickly one side of the ball and point would stop flow of oil. Seemed as though ball or point would seat if oil flow was fast. I remember having one set that worked well at idle with no load on cylinder, but soon as added weight of disk or plow plus high rpm, bingo it would lock. I remember another set worked well on pickup or corn head of forage harvester where springs carry most of the weight, yet they wouldn't work on plow or disk with much heavier hydraulic loads. I remember one spring throwing all the mismatches away and going to IH dealer for couplers to match factory originals on 560 and 656.

their are a lot of different quick couplers out their. IH itself went through 3 types that i can remember possibly more. I beliebe the 2 tractors you have use ISO tips that are commonly used today. I believe the popit style was specific to IH. It didn't matter if it had a ball or popit they worked the same. In the 70's IH came out with a new style of quick connects larger then the old and the tractor couplers had a lever. The big advantage was that you could hook and unhook lines under pressure and the lines would self disconnect if a pin fell out. The big problem was they were only for IH, everyone else was using ISO. Eventually IH switched back as the newer CashIH and FiatIH tractors now use ISO tips.

Early tractors, 30+ year old tractors seemed to be more brand specific - JD had their own style of fittings but now use ISO.

So you need to know which tips you have and get new/used ones that match. If your having problems with tips it might be the female part attached to the tractor. Some of the new ISO female coupling allow for connecting and unconnecting under pressure.

My dad's IH 504 was probably the most difficult tractor to hook and unhook. The new style IH couplers 66 and 86 series tractors much easier - no comparison.

Ed: I really don't need quick couplers anymore. been out of farming some years now, keep nothing around but SA, 130 and 140.

In my farming days having had at least one new tractor from each of letter, super letter, 00, 30-50, 40-60, 04-06, 56 and 66 series plus a Deere I saw it all when it comes to hydraulic quick couplers. Couple that with the fact I lugged about a dozen used implement cylinders home from auctions. One day I threw out every coupler that didn't match factory originals on 504, 560 and 656, which I believe were poineer if I remember correctly. I changed my 300, 1066, Deere and all cylinders to match what was on 504, 560 and 656. It seemed in the 60s and 70s every time you went to a farm store someone new was selling a new different hydraulic quick coupler. I guess they all thought they had a better idea.
