Bad gas in my H?

I'm thinking about the quick things I want to do to my H to get it running better to get it home and drive it around a bit to evaluate it to determine the extent of overhaul needed. One of the things I was thinking about was the gas. I have no clue how old the gas in the tank is, or what it is. Would this be much of a factor? Perfectionist me thinks I should just drain it all and fill the tank with high octane Chevron in order to have the cleanest gas possible. What do you all think?
Where do you drain the gas out from?

I totally disagree!!!! the tractors were made to run off of the cheapest gas back in the 30, 40, 50, 60's and that was when the cheapest gas was about 97 octane!!!!! I still run premium to this day and the plugs stay cleaner and it runs better with more power because of it! I even run it in my lawn equipment just because of it being a cleaner burning fuel! I know it is a waste of money as far as the newer equipment, but the older things will always get premium!!!!! !

Just a note that probably does not apply to you but bad gas can sometimes cause bad problems. I have a JD B here that had set in the shed for about 5 to 6 years because of a cracked head. Last Spring, I bought and installed a new head and set out to fire it up. I first took the sediment bowl off. The fuel in there was something like jello and stunk..the supply line...gummed up...the carb...gummed up...the fuel tank...gummed up...wound up a week of cleaning to get it so it worked. Bottom line is, fuel will go bad, if you are not going to run it, drain the fuel or put some additive in it to prevent this from happening.

The FarmAll "H" was made to run on 70-72 octane gasoline.

If it will run & burn it, then I would use it up. I just had to drain the tank on my H because it had water in it. The top of the cap was rusted through & the rain water I think was getting in. If I ever get the hay & straw out of my shed then I'll be able to put it inside.

pour the old gas on the hay and straw, add a lit match, and your problems are solved.

See? I may be new, but I can come up with crafty answers!

A lit match would undoubtedly get that old gas out of the tank on your H too! :)

If it is running, I would use up the fuel in it. Premium fuel is a waste on an H. Octane makes fuel harder to ignite, and produces a slower flame travel in the combustion chamber (it is actually cooler than regular) DON'T BUY IT).
Ifyou have not gotten my email on the splitting frame, the system is not working on your end. JimN

My H is worth the very best in gas. ;-) But noted on the higher octane burn rate. I'll buy the low grade.

And I got your e-mails, and I replied to them. :-)

The "premium" gas is of no better quality than "regular."

He's right about the burn rate of higher octane. And some additional food for thought,(this was posted sometime last week)- with the higher gas prices these days more people are likely to be buying cheaper-priced regular gas anyway, so it's likely to be fresher at most stations.

i'd do like old says and start at the carb. if the gas coming out looks real creepy or smelly, i;d pull the sediment bowl and drain there. rig up a trans funnel with a hose to send the old fuel into 5 gal gas cans. you may want to get some paint filter funnels to screen the crumbs out of the old fuel. that way you see whats in there. after you get the tank dry, unscrew the sediment bowl body and flush a little fuel thru to get the rest of the junk out. if its real rusty, pull the tank and have it cleaned and a liner put in

Well if it still smeels like gas then its probably ok to use, but if it smells like turpintine then drain it. Couple ways to drain it and each has its good points and bad points. If you pull the drain plug from the bottom of the carb and drain it taht way you will also help clean out any junk that maybe in the carb. Bad point to doing that is if the tank has junk in it you can end up with that junk in the carb. The other way to drain is take the line off at the carb and drain it that way. As far as useing high octane gas it will not hurt any thing but it also will not help any thing since old tractors where made to run on the cheapest stuff you could buy back then
