With my recent go around with my 300u, today I ordered a new starter drive from this site. My question is do the holders for the brushes have holes in them so I can pull the brush in and put a piece of wire through to hold them in when I put the gizmo (think its name is armature or bendix, but don't want to use the wrong word)back in. If not, how do you guys get a starter back together? I have nearly gone nuts with this one before, needed 3 monkeys and a squirrel to help which I didn't have. Thanks for any responses.

Jimer - 3 monkeys and a squirrel are not enough...you need at least one more squirrel(!)

Best way I've found is to make (4) "J" shaped hooks out of soft wire - #14 solid copper house wiring is about right. Before fitting the rear bearing cover to the starter frame, put one hook onto each brush holder, bending the hook as required so it holds the brush holder fully open.

Next mount the end cover to the starter frame. Then insert the armature all the way into the frame. It should bottom easily against the end plate since the brushes are being held away from the commutator by the wire hooks.

Finally after installing and tightening the (2) long thru bolts carefully remove the temporary hook from each brush holder thru the opening in the starter frame. The brushes will now be contacting the armature.
