A guy wanted me to look at his M today, that he says he has had trouble with the power steering unit. I went over and looked at it (could barely turn the wheel when running!!), it appears that it is a char-lynn pump and motor. So first it had no fluid in it I filled that up. Ran it still no better, the guy said that it had been turing hard for about 2 years and has been getting worse over that period. I removed the high pressure side and it had fluid coming out of it. the only thing I noticed is that the pump and the motor get hot after running for 5 mins or so. What could possibly be wrong with the system? could the hydro. motor be stressign the pump and causeing it to heat up? and thus not work???

Several years ago a man brought an M to me.It had a Charlyn power steering but said it turns hard all the time.I found you could sqeal the belt against the stop. Removed the nose piece to find the top bolster shaft had almost worn thru the top cover,the lower bearing was completly gone and was binding, Trouble was with the front end not the power steering.

Check to see if you have "dump" oil at the return hose on the reservoir side. The hose could have collapsed internally.

Also, is it a simple power steering pump? They can't stand over about 4 gpm, so if it is being fed by a larger flow pump, the extra oil needs to be bled off via a priority valve.

Just guessing, tho.

Allan, I could see the oil returing to the resoviour with the tractor running! As for the pump it looked like an orginal pump it did not look like a car pump. He said that the steering was good 2 years ago, I was wondering if the motor needs to be bleed or something??

Come to think of it,

When I put mine on, I had to jack the front of the tractor up to take weight off the front end.

Then, I ran it stop to stop about 6 times and it worked itself free.

One note tho, they just aren't like you'd expect. You can turn 'em with one finger while carrying a big bale..... if you're moving. Stopped and sitting still, they just don't do so well. Not like a newer tractor at all.

Heck, take 'er out and spin 'er around the yard a little. Maybe it just needs the kinks worked out.
