Rim Clamps

I have a 460 with double bevel rear rims held on by 8 clamps. While getting ready to paint them I noticed they all had the same part number. Parts book says two of them (per wheel) are supposed to be different, I assume they are the ones that fit against the perpendicular bevels and keep the rim from sliding on the wheel? Are these necessary? I have not used the tractor since I bought it, almost immediately disassembled it, so I don't know if rims would move or not. If so I need to replace them.

CNKS: I've given this subject a bit of thought since last evening and I doubt if those lugs are exclusive IH parts. I bought some of those from a Cockshutt dealer back in the 60s and they were identical to the IH part, both types. I expect as far back as the double bevel rims go, companies were outsourcing parts such as these. If Cockshutt were the same, very likely Oliver and Deere were as well.

In fact when I put replacement rims on my 300 they came from the same Cockshutt dealer. Same rim exactly as IH were selling.

Could be, except they have IH part numbers -- I suppose the manufacturer could have put on the numbers also. Also, the 450, 460, and 560, maybe the 350, don't remember, are the only ones with those part numbers -- don't know if ones from the later tractors mentioned will fit. I don't think IH made many of their own rims.

CN,

Sure don't know about a 460, but the bigger tractors take 3 per side to "stradle/wedge the bump". The others just help center the wheel.

Tried to get a shot of both styles but it was awfully dark out there this morning.

Yours are gonna be a little different "shape" too; probably more of a "pointed" looking lug?

Those look about like mine -- they are out in the shop, so I'm not sure. I do not remember which ones went where, or even if the ones I had straddled the hump. As I mentioned below, 3 of mine are chipped -- that could be the reason IH changed to heavier ones. Got a call into Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch to see if he has any -- thanks!

Allan: those must be from your 686, hydro, etc. The ones on my 560 were basically same except square and blunt on end towards axle. The lugs on my 300 tapered to almost a point. As I said to D Slater, I didn't think they were identical to 656 on 560.

CNKS, Is your parts book a later printing. Could be wrong but think some 460 came with all the same clamps.

Your're probably right. It has a 4 digit serial meaning early 1958. Also about 3 of them are damaged on the side that goes against the rim. At first I thought they were the different ones, but they had the same part number, thus they are broken and need to be replaced anyway.

CNKS: Those two you mention are basically same specs as it applies to mounting, they are quite a bit heavier. I used all heavy lugs on a couple of my tractors. 560 diesel came with all heavy lugs. I changed the 300 as I kept breaking the light ones. I think long handled wrenches had more to do with breakage than use. I think the most important item is tighten them each a bit at a time so they are all the same. The heavy ones do fill the space for stopping wheel slip on bead better.

Hugh, from what I can remember is the heavy clamps for 460 and 560 don't look like one in Allens picture. They looked close to regular clamps but were thicker from top to bottom where bolt goes through and more squared on end to inside of wheel. Maybe a little wider also. Does this sound like clamps you used?

D Slater: I haven't seen Allans photo, but what your describing sounds right to me. My memory is a bit rusty, but I don't think the ones on my 656 were exactly same as 560 either. I can't say for sure either on 1066, I just don't remember.

I guess the reason those 300 lugs stand out is we broke so many of them. I remember compareing with 560 to see difference, and decided if all heavy duty works on 560, it will work on 300. By the time 70s came along we hardly ever had rear wheels off those tractors. Tire shops would change tires without removing rims for less money than I needed for paying wages on someone to do it. I can't ever remember having wheels off my 656. I do remember having one wheel off 1066. I had an employee call me one day working on new cleared land. He had both inside and axle dual flat. Someone had used that field for a dump, when it was still forest. Got tangled up in some old building supplies.
