wegman: You've got one in between there, it would have been 806, then 856 and then 966, followed by 986. Basically all in the 100hp or just under class.

Richard: Yes your right, it was built at the same time 56 series were in production. 826 is basically the same tractor as 856 other than it was built in Europe using a German engine and had some other features not quite as delux as 856. These tractors were clearly imported to meet Deere competition, (who were doing the same) and sell for a lower price than the American built 56 series. Good tractors for the money at the time but they didn't pack the same torque as 806 or 856.

Back in those days here in Canada, (being part of the British Empire) at least we had seen a lot of European tractors, many of which had been major disappointments. Large farms with a lot of acreage to cover tended to shy away from European tractors. I guess one of the bigger factors, European tractors in general were not climatized for starting in our cold Canadian winters. I know myself, I avoided anything European with an engine, as if it had the plague.

Are you sure about 826 being built in Europe? I know the engine, the D358 ,was built in IH plant in Neuss , Germany. I believe that the 826 was assembled in Rock Island Ill. on same assembly line as 56 series in production at the same time.

Yes, the 826 was built in Rock Island, IL. The 826 was the successer to the 756 really. When the hydro trans was an option, IH decided to soup up the 756. Used the Germsn 358 diesel-much longer stroke, bigger radiator, etc and was going to call it the Super 756 or 756 Series II. ended up being the 826. Also introduced at the same time was the 1026, which was a turboed 856. The 826 had option of regular gear tran or hydro, I think all 1026's were hydros.

Weldon: I wouldn't argue that one as I think they were assembled both sides of the ocean. Here in Canada we tended to get complete European assembled tractors, whereas you folks had components shipped in. That answer probably is different depending where you live.

Are you saying that there was a plant in europe that built 06,26,56 series tractors and then shipped them to canada? If so were they the same tractors as sold here in the states? Why would they have shipped tractors across the atlantic when they were building them in Rock Island? I knew they built tractors overseas but I just figured it was the small ones. bill

Bill: The 06 and 56 series, were never assembled in Europe, however 26 was. Up until the mid 1970 we paid a duty on every Farmall coming to Canada from the US. European tractors came in here duty free. That was all because it suited a couple of Canadian companies.

Skid loaders were an interesting one. Thomas at NB were not supplying 10% of the market in Canada, thus you could reclaim the duty paid on US built skid steers. That was in place when I bought my first Case skid steer in 72, and gone by 76 when I bought a second Case loader. The duties gone from equipment was part of the auto pack and not free trade.
