Started to take the rear hubs of a SM I am getting ready to paint and can't get the clamp bolts to budge. 3/4 inch impact won't shake them and it is a good impact with 1/2 inch supply line. The good thing is the hubs are in the right location on the axel if all else fails I will paint them where they are at and leave them alone.

Also, if you try to tighten the bolt a slight bit sometimes that will help break the tension and 50 plus years of rust and such that is holding it all together.

After you heat them, let them cool back down, this lets them break the rust freeand normally break lose easier

They all are hard to loosen after they have been there a while a GOOD 3/4 inch flex handle with 5 foot cheater will loosen then are twist them off though. Soak them with good penatrating oil for a few days first.

FF,

I agree. Take the rim off at the lugs, mask off the axles and paint the wheel with the rest of the tractor.

However, you've also gotta get those axle clamps loose for future use.

I suggest you get the correct IH lug wrench. Can't imagine working on a Farmall without one.

Use lots of heat. Acetylene/oxygen would be my choice. Hal

dakotaclassic - suggest you try a MAP gas torch the next time instead of the propane. MAP is hotter and will shorten the time to get the bolts off. Oxyacetylene torch is better yet if you have it.

Fancy Farm: Forget that impact wrench, the only impact wrench I've ever seen that could apply as much preasure as a man with a 4' handle is a 1" drive.

Use a good 3/4 drive with a 4' handle, plus heat on the cast wheel clamps. I have seen those bolts twisted off, and it wasn't done with an impact wrench.

hes right, lots of paitence and heat. i just removed the manifold from my f20 that has been on since 36. it took about 3 hrs and a lot of propane to get 4 bolts off without breaking them but imagin how much longer it would take if i broke them?

Heat the hub with a torch, use a 3/4 strong bar and break them free. That's what I did with my H.Patience is most important, impacts can break the bolts.
