wedge locks?

what are wedge lock wheels? what part is the wedge lock refering to--the rim clamp or the axle clamp?
pics?
at home have a 1256 to look at and an H. both axle clamps are u-bolt style. rims are different mounting style--1256 the clamps support the rim to hub and a couple clamps interlock with the rim to keep it from spinning, H is ...h style rims where there is a block that interlocks with the hub. have had this question for 15 years!

the wedge lock wheels work great for 100+ horsepower tractors. the clamp style wouldn't hold that much power without working loose or breaking the bolts. the wedge lock's aren't that hard to move if you follow the instuctions in your owners smanual of useing the tool to hold the one wedge while the other pushs itself loose and if it doen't want to loosen you hit the top of the axle, not the end of the axle a sharp blow with a sledge hammer. the best thing about these wheels is they will not work loose once the wewdges are seated.

Oh Allen, pleeezze take that picture off of here I never want to see those again including that 60 degree stubby wrench that went with it that you put a 10' piece of pipe on and when you ask the dealer what it will take to break it loose and they ask if you oiled the threads you say yes they say good luck. What makes it even more fun is to have 18.4 X 38 or 20.8 X 38's loaded with Calcium Chloride @ 11 to 12 pounds to the gallon trying to slide the tire in or out. Whew! I'm breaking out in a cold sweat.

There's more to the story than meets the eye.

I've still got to have the tire people come out and load these tires with salt.

I bought the darned tractor because I needed a little more muscle. So far, the 966 can pull circles around it because of the traction issue.

The plow "pushes" the 1066 around, so just gotta grit my teeth and do it. :>(

Allan: I'd sooner tackle those than the clamp type. Just throw away that 60 degree wrench IH sent with tractor, buy a good 3/4 drive 12 point impact socket, and a 3/4 drive handle the 5' pipe fits snugly on. And you must have the wheel clamp.

I threw that IH wrench away before the tractor was 10 days old. Folks that kept the IH wrench, just buggered up the head of the wedge lock bolt, then they really had problems. At 500 ft lbs you've got to keep that socket and bolt head in good shape.

Oh,

The darned things are set pretty close for use on this old dryland farm, so I'm not gonna lay a finger on it.

However, it crosses my mind that if I ever have to take it down on the irrigated stuff, I might be in for an afternoon of full-bore "tractor cussin". :>)
