Gobble Gobble to every one. I have this A model that was "restored". Well it has pretty paint and decals, runs great and has new rubber. But, not so well restored. The rear rims aren't even installed the same way-tires should be opposite so rims mount with the same offset etc... So the current question is: How difficult is it to get at the worm and sector gears in the steering? This has 4" of slop so I am sure it needs steering gears. The links and tie rod ends are fine as are the pivot bushings. It is an adjustable front. I need some advice on how to get it apart.

There is lots of info a A steering in the archives.
This has been discussed in detail in the past. Pictures and all.
I have an A I need to do sometime and when new they did not have much slop as I remember anyway.

To rebuild the sector you have to remove the axle so you can take the sector apart. The keys mite be worn and the bearing on the end of the shaft mite have wear and let the shaft one the steering wheel mite have end play. The ball ends on the linkage can be ground with a sanding disc to get them round again. Use a calipers to check them. There are bushings also that can be worn. The new parts are around40 or so. I have done several and end up with good results. Fill with 90wt so the bushings and bearings run in oil.

On the newer models (not the square shaft) the woodruff key is on the vertical shaft coming out of the gear box. Inside the gear box is a half gear(on the vertical shaft) and worm gear on the steering shaft entering the gear box. Not much you gan do with the gears but you may be able to get the key slop out with a new key if the shaft slot isn't too bad. It doesn't take much slack to magnify on the steering wheel.

Can't remember for sure, but it seems that there is a woodruff key in the gear box which may be sloppy. Otherwise it is probably a worn bushing in the box where the steering arm shaft comes out. Good luck with it.

The lower arm does not have play and is tight to the shaft, I cannot push or pull the steering wheel shaft in or out so no end play. Are you saying that 4" of rim movement before it moves the steering arm is OK? That is +2 -2 or a total of 4". Seems like a lot.

5 inches of play is WAY tighter than average A.

If the steering arm which comes out of the gear box has a square which mates with the shaft coming out of the gear box & tightens with a 3/8 's bolt, see if there is slop or looseness at this point. If you can't tighten this bolt further, you can remove a small amount from one side of the arm with a hacksaw to let the bolt tighten up better. If the arm is the later style, this method won't work. If all is tight in the steering arm department, you will have to get into the steering box & see what it needs.
