Correct Cub front knuckles

I've got a 1949 Cub and it needs some front end rebuilding...the previous owner WELDED the frickin' steering arms to the tops of the knuckles...grrrrr rrrrr r! Otherwise, this cub is is very nice condition. I see a couple different knuckle styles in my parts catalog, but the illustrations and the part descriptions leave a lot to the imagination. Does anybody know which version is "correct" for a 1949 Cub, S/N 98040?

Thanks!

Tim, That must have been a common thing to do. I bought a Cub several years ago and just finished restoring it. The previous owner had also welded mine (didn't notice when I bought the tractor). It is a job cutting them off as you need to sawzall through the steering arms far enough until you cut through the shaft. Mine is a 1947 and I replaced them with the coarse thread screws. It can be expensive I found out as you need replacement spindles and steering arms (right and left hand). Good luck. Roger

Unless there is a serial break listed in your catalog, they are both correct. IH used at least two suppliers for many of the steering parts, thus the different part numbers. If you will look closely at yours and the illustrations, you should be able to tell which ones you have. Since you likely have to go to the aftermarket for them, that does not mean they are available, but others should interchange.

Ya...there is a serial break listed. Unfortunately, the illustrations I have are garbage, so it's hard to tell...besides...mine have been butchered by the welding I mentioned. As I buy parts for this tractor, I'd like to keep them as close to original as possible. It's currently just a lawn mower, but in the future, it'll probably end up being a show toy.
