I have a 74 International Serial number B9437 and the steering somehow freezes up on me when the temp drop to freezing. I can't move the steering at all meaning the steering wheel. Does the hydraulic has anything to do with the steering? or is it the arm that moves the steering!I grease the piston arm and all grease fitting that I could find. I don't know if I have to remove all fluid , for I was told that this tractor is all one unit. I need to get myself a manual. I don't see no dip stick , but at the back of the seat there a place where I fill the hydraulic oil. But try to give me a clue or idea what to look at so I can have a good idea what it might be, before taking it to a dealer..thanks Dean

Hi, does the hitch work when the steering do not work? May be the oil strainer is full of dirt or ice. I've seen a trouble like that once, the steering turn on one side, then don't on the other. When you turn the sterring on both side, it have a small play to pull or push the cylinder valve. The end of the valve( thread end) have tendancy to wear and not open all the way. Put some drop of weld on the thead end and the trouble is fixed. Bernard le mécano Québec Canada

The Hydrualic arms on the back of the tractor works fine, I did try to turn it by force, and a oil like substance came out up near the steering colum. I stop as soon has I saw this. My friend who work on alot of tractors , but not the international ones, told me that there is two different units for the oil. I was lead to believe that this tractor only had one hydraulic oil fill up for everything including the steering. He said not. I'm not sure for I only put TDH in my tractor and that was near the stick shift. I have no dip stick so I check the back one where it has a square head nut, to loosen near the back seat. I check with my finger , if i can touch the oil I consider it ok..I didn't know about the steering unit..I must look into that ...thanks for your info.

Hi, the 434 have a tandem pump,on the right side of the engine, one for the hitch and the other for the steering. The oil for both system is under the seat. The level is about 4 inches below the top when the arms are down. It have a strainer on the big line to the pump, drain the oil, loose the 2 clamp and slide the rubber hose, pull the strainer out and wash with solvent. Bernard le mécano

Dean: Try giving a model number along with that serial number. I can think of a 1/2 dozen IH that would have all used that serial number. I'm thinking with that B in fornt of the number probably on of the British IH. There are folks here who know those tractors.

I believe it a 434 international, diesel. The number on the tractor is B9437 . If I leave it run for a very long time it would turn one way but not the other way..I can't figure it out..help...

Dean: It's been awhile since I've been around a 434, but does it have power steering cylinder incorperated into drag link along left side of tractor. If I remember correctly the linkage coming from steering wheel activates a control valve on the end of the cylinder. Is that valve part of the cylinder, I think it is. The problem is probably right at that valve.

Come back and let me know how close I've come. Not sure I know how to fix it, but this dialogue is bound to stir someone who does.
