I had written earlier about this above referenced tractor that has all new elecrical parts on it but still won't run or even start.
People had given me suggestions such as; make sure you have power to the coil, which I have, but I still have not spark to the plugs. I have also taken the plug out and placed it next to the block, with plug wire attached, and no spark is detected. The coil is new, but doesn't seem to be working properly.
Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Quick check: take the bolted on lead from coil to dist, off of the out side of the distributor. Take the coil wire out of the distributor tower and place it close to the block (1/16"). Turn on the ignition then intermittently touch the first lead you removed to a bare metal ground. this will act like a set of points, causing (hopefully a spark at the coil wire. It will not be much of a spark because the condenser is not hooked up, but it is diagnostic.
If spark, the problem is in the distributor. Probably a grounded part. JimN

Turn the switch on, take the distributor cap off, take a screwdriver and open/close the points. You should see a small spark at those points.

If no spark at the points, you have no primary and need to check the voltage in, the points, the condenser or your ground.

If you have a nice snappy spark at the points, the problem is in the secondary.

The "opening" of the points is what triggers the coil to discharge. If you have no spark at the coil tower, problem is the coil.

If you do have spark at the coil tower, put the distributor cap back on and follow that route out of the coil to the coil wire, into the distributor cap, the rotor, out to the plug wires or the plugs.

You're loosing it somewhere, be it on the primary side or on the secondary.

Be sure your battery is up.
