Farmall H Manuals Explained

I purchased a 51 Farmall H. This is my first tractor. I am not too mechanically inclined so I bought a good running one. I am sure I need to replace the seat spring and pistons. Can anyone explain the difference between the Parts Manual, Operators Manual, and Service Manual?

If I could have only one manual it would be the parts book (called the "parts catalog" by IHC).

That's not to say the others are not valuable. However the parts catalog is the ones I refer to far and away most frequently!

CaseIH has an online parts manual now.

Bob M, I agree, if a person is any kind of mechanic, you can look in the parts catalog and pretty much figure out how something is supposed to come apart. About the only thing you won't know is capacities, torque specifications, and final adjustments.

The parts book shows a drawing of every part and gives the part number. It also shows how things go together.

The operators manual tells how to operate and maintain the tractor.

The service manual tells how to fix it. There are two main varieties, IH and I&T. They both have strengths and weaknesses. Together the are pretty complete.

IT manuals will available at Tractor Supply and other better farm and ranch supply stores. IH manuals (usully copies, sometimes originals) can be had through sites like this one - look to the lower left corner of the screen.
