Update - M is up and running.

Installed the tuneup kit for the mag on my M and it fired right up. Moved the mag around so that it sounded like it was running nice and smooth. Guess you need to replace those points and condensor every 30 years.

I'll work on the timing more tomorrow, but what does everyone suggest on setting timing. Heard of just setting by ear, other's say the rotor should be just past #1 at piston TDC. Whats the consensus (sp?).

Thanks for all the help guys.

To allow for starting without kickback, timing can't be much before TDC, even with an electic starter.

So, as you hand-crank it with the "kill switch" in the "stop position", you will hear the impulse "snap" at #1 TDC.

When it is started, as soon as the impulse cuts out, it advances all at once to running timing.

This advance or "impulse lag angle" is determined by the manufacturer's "specs" for the impulse.

So, with # 1 firing @ TDC while cranking, and the impulse working, and set up properly for the engine, the running timing will be correct.

Does this sentence mean that the mag should be adjusted so that on "snap"...the piston be at TDC? I think that is what you said...??

Yes.

With a magneto, the timing "spec" is TDC while cranking.

The impulse will "snap", and spark will occur at TDC.

Then, when the engine "catches" and speeds up enough to "kick out" the impulse, spark occurs at 35 degrees BEFORE TDC.
