I have a 300U that I need to tow (with chain) about 5 miles. Will doing this screw up the T/A? Do I put the T/A lever forward or back?
This is a non running tractor.that I got for 200.00 + old snowmobile.

I don't think you should hurt the T/A either way since you will be pulling it in neutral, but just to be sure I would leave it forward/direct drive (away from the operator). If you can't find a trailer, I would strongly recommend that you pull it with another tractor in a lower gear ie third or fourth if you have an old M or H. If you must pull with a truck don't go over 5 mph. Don't ask how I know.

This doesn't apply if you are neutral, but if you have to pull start it NEVER have the TA in the engaged position. The engaged position is closest to the operator and the rear. Forward is high range which is just the regular rear end.

Don't tow it...haul it. If you go too fast you may dammage the thrust washers in the transmission and it will not go in gear. Did that once on a Super H which is basically the same drive train.
Put it on a trailer and be safe.

put the rear wheels in the dolly, tie the stearing wheel and go as fast as the tires will allow.

I believe the TA goes towards the rear,, not sure if it will screw anything up being dragged that far,,is this a wide front?? ,if its narrow how ya gonna keep it from tipping,,,i'd spend the 50 bucks and put her on a trailer a lot less headaches, and safer for the other guy,,,

Actually it doesn't matter.

With the transmission in NEUTRAL, the TA section isn't turning.

If I where you I would use a trailor even if you have to rent one. We hauled a 300U on a 16 foot car hauling trailor with no problems. Biggest reason isn't that it will hurt the TA but because of safety and brakes not working well on the tractor
