Maybe tractor vet or someone can enlighten me on this: From more than one aftermarket parts suppliers, there is a "Dominator" overhaul kit option. Apparently this comes with pistons that increase the compression ratio from 15:1 to 15.5:1 or 16:1, depending upon kit. I don't need extra power out of engine, but I was wondering if it would make it start better in cold weather. Also, what kind of adverse effects could this have--(such as hotter operating temp). I certainly couldn't afford it to raise operating temp in 100 degree July Texas summer. Salesman is pushing it and says this won't be an issue with the 15.5:1 kit, but could be an issue with the 16:1 kit. What are some thoughts on this? By the way, thanks for all of the good responses to my last post.

As long as you don't go adding fuel it shouldn't run any hotter. If you can get off-road fuel run it if you're worried about heating, my dad's td8g runs cooler and burns a gallon and a half per hour less than when running on low-sulpher fuel.

Yep, you're right.

They orginally came out with 15:1 compression and the reason they slobber and don't start when it's below 60 degrees. Essentially, the effect was somewhat like an old 282D without glow plugs.

Aftermarkets and CaseIH changed the plan on the second design of the engine. Get the 17:1 pistons.

Now i may be wrong here but if my febel old mind remember wright the German diesels were all over the 16-1 and more like 17.5 as when they came out there was a lot of flap about not putting a hairdryer on them because of compression ratio . So here ya had better check before ya buy . I know the kits that i got had the correct ratio because they were the same piston that ya get from the friendly case ih store less the part # and i can not see payen a 100 bucks a hole over the cost of and aftermarket that is the same but come in a plain brown wrapper rather then the pretty red and white box , guess i am just plum cheap.
