Newly acquired IH 606 -- Where to start?

I just brought home my first ever tractor, an IH 606 Diesel with loader. It is in pretty good shape, very complete, but has sat for 5 years. Where do I start? I'm going to change the oil, hydraulic fluid, etc. Do I need to worry about draining the diesel? I've heard that diesel fuel can last forever, unlike gas. I will replace/clean the fuel filters. Should I worry about changing the hydraulic filters? The best part is that I picked the tractor up for $400. It's got about 6600 hours on the clock, previous owner is a friend of a friend, whom I trust and he said the tractor ran pretty minty when it was parked.

Well, I finally got around to working on her yesterday, and after changing the fuel filters and putting in fresh diesel, putting in new dual batteries, she fired right up!! Smoked like crazy, but that's to be expected.... She sat and idled perfectly, and ran really good. Now I've got to replace the hydraulic fluid, and figure out the clutch. For some reason the clutch feels like it is stuck 'engaged'. I can crank it over in gear, and the tractor does not move. Would having no hydraulic/tranny fluid in it cause this? I've yet to pull of the inspection plate and have a look at the clutch....

Wow, thanks for all of the tips guys! I've got it in my heated shop right now, and I'll probably tackle it this weekend, time permitting. It was a battle getting it home, because the back brakes are locked up on it. So pull starting it is probably not an option.... You should've seen me trying to drag that monster into my shop with just myself and my trusty quad. :) It does have the sediment filter under the tank, step 1 will be to clean it out. Will definitely report back on the progress this weekend.

I don't have much to add other than I got a 560D that had been sitting outside 13 years (Colorado climate) and got it running after replacing fluids, etc. Had to tow it to get it going the first time. The 282 likes glow plugs and strong batteries. Not sure if the 236 (?) is similar.

Had a few surprises that come with sitting a long time (like a dead bird behind the fuel tank baffle), but nothing very taxing.

Good luck!
Sam.

First, get it running and check for leaks and other problems. Get it totally warmed up, then change engine oil and filter, fuel filters, air filter, hydraulic oil and filter. Drain and flush the cooling system. Grease all the grease fittings. Tighten the fan and generator belts. The PTO unit may have it's own oil, if so, change it. You shouldn't have to dump the fuel. If it has a sediment bowl at the bottom of the fuel tank, service it. If it's got a water drain off valve at the bottom of the tank, open it and drain off the water (is not possible if the temp is below freezing, as the water will of course be frozen!). Pull the valve cover and adjust your valve lash. You may want to remove and test the glow plugs. These engines start extremely hard if they do not have six good glow plugs and an operator who is patient enough to sit there and hold the button for 30-60 seconds before starting the engine.

I would drain the fuel tank. Diesel fuel does not last forever, and there will be water in the fuel from sitting. The condition of the hydraulic fluid is unknown, so I would recomend changing it and the filter as well. Use Hy-Tran, which can be purchased at your local Case dealer, along with the filter. When you have the filter out, look for any metal shavings, which is a good warning of a bearing going out.

If everything goes well, you will have one heck of a tractor for the money.

Good Luck

after 5 years, it might be smart to drain the diesel too. diesel can get an algae in it that will plug filters and cause lots of headaches. you did good for $400. just the loader is probably worth more than that.

The first thing "to do" is buy an owners manual. It will save asking many questions here.

Already done, original owners manual came with it and I"ve read it back to front, and shop manual on its way. I"ve also gone through all of the forum topics with 606 or 2606 in the replies. I like to think I have a pretty good although basic of the tractor, so hopefully once I start tearing into it I"ll have somewhat of an idea what I"m doing!

I don't like to be negative but a friend of mine purchased one several years ago, long story short it was very hard to start ended up shooting ether in it in the summer to start it, needless to say he doesn't own it any more. But back to the question at hand first get it to run new fluids would be a good start oil and fuel then see what you have after you get it running if runs pretty good do all the rest fix what needs fixing change coolant stuff like that also get a manual. good luck and ask lots of questions
