ok all you IH fellas, i just took in an old 806.I normally work on old molines. The ta is out, im guessing the clutch isnt in the best of shape, i was told the rear end has a slight howl. I'm wondering just what im looking at, things you have seen. i think this ol 806 would be a nice one to have if i could get the back half in order.

question for allan in reply to meanmoline, 12-07-2006 13:05:26
i dont understand your post on the 1066 966 rear, there all the same even the old 706 will enterchange, i have used used crosses out of 560 hogs when rebuilding a quick fix to get a farm 1066 back in the feild, the ring and pininion are different, 13.49 in a 34 inch rear wheeled 966 12-51 in a 1066, the brakes on a 10 the bullgears and bull pinions are heaver but all the hogs and crosses ive took out are the same we usally do from 3 to 10 a year

Yes Sir,

Well now, after doing a bit of "digging around" and research, I see exactly what you mean. :>(

That little operation is just a tiny, wee bit deceiving in the way that Case/Ih's "update" works.

Originally, the 766/966/Hydros had smaller bearings than the 1066/up applications. Okay, but I now find that all field repairs are automatically updated to the heavier stuff via an "update" kit.

Absolutely, positively and finally the only way ya can even buy the goofy things.

This is grand, this is great, this is just fine and I agree. Let's do it, but don't let on like I have a $400 choice in the matter, 'cause I either buy the big stuff or the damned tractor goes un-repaired. :>)

Thanks for the early morning eyeopener. Hmmmm, learn something new every day around here. :>)

Allan

yessir i knew the bearing was different, ive took several 1066 and 1466 tractors appart and the hog was sheared off right at the back of the bearing, it would have been nice if the 1066 and 1466 would have had somthing a little heavear , when moleboard plowing was the thing to do we always had sombodys 10 or 14 puttin a cross in to get them back in the feild, one tire sliping more than the other will sure eat the cross up,

it can b the cross or a bearing, or even the backlash setn up to tight, on a9 or 1066 ih if one tire spins more than the other it dont take long to burn up the cross the sun gears will actually cut the cross in to then the tractor wont move, sometimes the sun gears will gauld to the cross and the tractor will only go strait act like its got posi taractionm and when the cross is worn they will make all kindsa funny noises, im no expert just a farmer ,tractor puller who works on these old tractors for a hobby and to try and keep the wolf away from the door, the last 705 mm we did i drilled a hole thruthe side of the case and [ut a snubber bolt on the ring gear to keep it from walkin, sorry for the typin errers, thanks to diabetees i dont see so good and i dont hit the keeys im lookin at thanks paul

TA is from $550 to $700. Clutch disc, pressure plate, pto gear, gaskets, throw out bearing and flywheel grind will be $400 (all my cost). Try the rearend before you take it apart. You can take the third link off the back and shine a lite in to inspect. Where are you from?

You won't see the bull gears for the back. They are in the axle housing on the outside of the rear frame. You will have to take the brakes apart and pull the pinon shaft out and you'll see the bull gear from there.

MM,

A light "singing" sound is normal. It's when they "growl" is what worries me.

Just had my 966 gone thru by the local Red Shop. Dropped in a new 1066 rear end and it cost me $3902.

Allan
