M steering --Grease or oil?

Can anyone tell me if the steering sector box on top of bolster on a M uses grease or oil in it.
Pulled steering shaft out to work on radiator and looked like oil ran out. Need to fill back up with something now. Books don't seem to say anything about it. Thanks

Cornhead multilube for corn heads is thicker than 85-140 but thinner than grease.

I put Kendall wheel bearing grease (blue stuff) in mine and it works just fine.

Before this forum discussion I was planning to fill the lower part of the gear well with lithium grease and then put 90-W-140 over top until the gears were covered. That was my plan for next summer. Now I do not know what to do.

Gear lube is best if it will stay in, have seen tractors that put in 60 hour weeks run for years with grase in steering box with no problems though. All grease is not equal have had good results with grease that is approved for GM wheel bearing, can not remember what it is called.

I put sae 85w140 gear oil in mind and it stayes full it"s a pretty heavey oil just thought i would mention it ROBERT FROM MICH.

don't want to start an argument here but if you put cup grease in place of gear oil the gears will wallow out a cavity in the grease and the the teeth will not get lubricated properly .this applies to all gear boxes that were intended to be lubricated with gear oil .

Well the IHC operator's manual says to fill the steering box with transmission oil (85W-90 or similar). However as others observe keeping the stuff from leaking out from the bottom can be a problem - even after a new pivot shaft seal installed.

I packed both of mine (SH and SM) full with good gun grease 7 or 8 years ago. Neither has leaked a drop since, and the steering remains nice and smooth after several hundred hours of operation (mine are not show tractors!)

I'm in aggreement with BobM. I used Gun Multi-purpose Grease in both of my Super M's and my Super H as well with no problems.

Are those the ones that have the power steering on as well? And they seem to work okay in heavy service?

Maybe we should all switch 'em over to grease.

Indeed Allan!

One of mine (the Super M) has a Charlyn power steering kit on it. It also has oversize front tires. So the steering gear set gets worked especially hard on this tractor.

Trick is to fill the gear pot COMPLETELY. Use a putty knife or similar to pack the grease into every available space so it's filled solid. Now when the gears turn, grease is continually being churned into both the worm and sector teeth. There's simply no way the gearing can "dig a hole" in the grease and ultimately run dry.

Also it helps to use a good quality, brand-name grease - like JD "corn head grease" or similar. I don't recommend the cheap axle grease (which for all I know may be rendered from road kill...) like Walmart carries.

Note - I popped the cover on the Super M steering pot after a year or so operation to see how it was doing. Found gears were were being very nicely lubed - no problem whatsoever! ...Bob

you may want to change the seal in the upper part of the housing. its located on the lower part were the shaft comes up thru to the worm and sector. i used a piece of pipe to get the seal up in there, its either 1" or 1-1/4. also use emery paper and shine up the seal surface on the shaft. i had mine apart a couple of times went thru 2 seals before i finally figgured out i needed to shine up the shaft a little. sometimes i just plain get a brain f*rt.

Glen,

Maybe we should tell him that the "parade and show" crowd just fill the things up with cup grease.

So, if it is going to be a "light duty" tractor, perhaps he can save himself a bit of "fixin'".
