I recently rebuilt my 1950 cub, and was having trouble getting the engine to fire after the rebuild. I finally got it to fire, but after letting the engine run for a few minutes, I tried the touch control on the hydraulic and the control arm would not move. It"s stuck all the way forward and won"t budge. The pump is getting hot, like it is continuing to work and the unit is not reaching a resting (neutral) position.

This is a new (rebuilt) hydraulic resevior that my Dad bought a long time ago (over 12 years), it"s just been sitting around, but always inside out of the weather. The pump is the same one that was on the tractor, and was working fine. I did not take the pump off of the tractor during the rebuild.

The unit is not making any strange noises. There does seem to be a little vibration on the top hydraulic line. I"m wondering if there is air in the system that needs to be bled off (not sure how to do that), or some other settings that need to be adjusted. Other than that I can only think that some control valve inside the unit is stuck. I used new IH HY Tran fluid when I filled it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

You're going to have to pull it off, take it apart, and figure out what's wrong. This probably isn't going to be as simple as adjusting a screw somewhere. Sounds like a pretty serious issue.

I had the same thig happen to me i the middle of using the tractor. I lifted the arms up and let go of the touch control and snapped it back to the neutral position, but then the engine started to bog, the lift wasnt doing anything, I was starting to painc. I cycled the tough control handle probaly 5 times and then it quit and hasnt done it since. Old things can be finicky I guess.

I don't know, but I suspect the reservoir. Specifically that either the upper or lower pistons my be rusted shut. First make sure that the rocker arms are not binding. Could be air, that is removed by moving the levers back and forth through several cycles--BUT the filler cap must be off when you do that. It could be that the pump is not primed, you will ruin it pretty quick with no oil in it.

Well, if it"s air, and the only way to bleed it off is by moving the lever back and forth w/ the plug open, I"m sunk because the control lever is not budging.

I didn"t attempt to prime the hydraulic pump. I thought it would just pick up the prime since it"s located well below the reservior. How do you prime it?

kermit, did you drain the old oil out? if not you should re-do it, drain and refill with all new oil. to get air out,run engine on idle and move the t c lever back and fourth the full travel distance at least 12 times, this is after you have put in new oil. post back with your progress. RP

I did put new Hydraulic fluid in when I filled it. I can't move the control arm, so I can't bleed off air that way. Seems more and more like something must be seized up inside.

If I take the unit off the tractor and drain the fluid, I should be able to push the cylinder pistons back and forth right? I mean they should be free moving w/o and hydraulic pressure working against them, correct? I'm thinking if I take the unit off, drain it, and I can't compress the pistons, something must be stuck inside. Am I correct in that?

There is a travel limit stop under the TC unit that limits the movement of the hand lever. make sure you have the arm inside its' brackets.

Y probably will not be able to move the arm with it drained. You have have one of the internal valves stuck. It should always have the piston retracted when removed and drained.
