I've been thinking about converting my M over to a distributor, I haven't been able to find any postings about it. What would I all need?

Thanks,
Bobg

Hi, I have changed my H, over. You will get a little more power and snap from a battery ignition, just be sure it has the timing advance they put out for the fire crater pistons. All you need is a new ignition switch to go with it. Run a 12 gauge wire from the ammeter to the switch and then on to the coil, get it timed right and it will go. Good Luck, Chuck

I had a H that I could drink half a cup of coffee in the time it took to turn over one revolution.

But it had a good hot mag and it started everytime.

Just my opinion.

actually i don"t understand why you want to switch. there is nothing wrong having a mag. i myself when i get a tractor without a mag i put one on. nothing worse then a dead battery but with a mag and a crank at least i can go again.

I got no problem converting a mag to a battery powered external coil ignition, youre simply still using the points to make n break the external coil current HOWEVER I do question whether or not the mfd rating of the condensor ought to be changed (to one used in regular coil ignitions) ????? ? The external coil likely has a different inductance and draws more amps then the mags coil by which its condensor may be rated different buttttt ttttt ttt if it works and the points arent failing prematurely GO FOR IT..... .. If an inspection of the points indicates more pitting towards one side versus the other and/or the points arent lasting long, you may wanna buy a condensor for the regular coil ignition.

Just a thought, again, if it aint broke dont fix it lol

Here's a mag converted using a ballast resistor.

actually you just need a new coil. take the top off the mag and clip the wire from the coil to the points. install a new 12 volt coil (provided you are on a 12v system) with resistor and connect it to the outside terminal to the points. install a new 2 prong switch and run your hotwire from it to the coil. biff bam boom you are in business. have a '45 h that has been like this for over 30 years with no problem. link shows picture of it.

I prefer the magneto myself - no need for a battery and associated wiring. A good magneto will provide many years of trouble free service... just curious as to why you want to switch?

You'd need a complete distributor/drive with a coil of the appropriate voltage, some wire, and a 2-terminal ignition switch to replace the mag "kill" switch you now have.
