Still looking for a tractor for my acreage. Duties to include pushing snow, grading gravel, running a bush hog mower, moving round bales etc.
Upcoming auction has a gas-burner IH 666 and also an IH 656 row-crop. Both tractors have unknown hours, but have been indicated to have worked everyday on a feeder wagon, haying etc. Both tractors have turned over the hour meter so at least 10,000 hours. Tin is straight and paint/tires average. Would either one of these be a good tractor for my needs? What do you guys prefer the 656 or 666? Any special things to look for on these, and how about the magical question....price range?
Thanks
DJL

656 or 666 will suffice your needs but stay away from 10K hours to many mechanical high dollar repair/non repairable items are past there life expectancy. Do you need a row crop clearance tractor or will a utility version work better, if not doing heavy pulling a hydro or powershift would be slick, and power steering is a must, make sure it has a 3 pt hitch not a 2 pt or fast hitch or straight drawbar. Have I confused you yet?

DJL: I don't know how many acres your working, but I'd think long and hard before buying a 6 cylinder gasser, especially one over 10,000 hours.

There are any number of gassers in the 3000 to 5000 hour range. A chassis with low hours would make an excellent tractor for a diesel repower. Either staying gas or looking at possible diesel repower, go look for the low hour tractor.

The 656, 66 and 686 are all pretty much just the same tractor with differing engines.

Subtle changes are lighting placement, type of hydraulic remotes, cosmetic grillwork and trailer wiring outlet addition.

Last 656 I heard of was a diesel that sold for $3250. Have heard of 686 diesels going for upwards of $10K.

These tractors do it all and would fit your plans perfectly.

656 and 666 are practically the same tractor with some minor changes. Both are excellent chore tractors and being a gasser makes them easy to start in the winter. I did not see how many acres you had, but I would not think that I would want it on any less than 5 acres as it would be overkill. I have seen some decent gassers listed for anwhere from $4 to $6K.
