Do I run transhydraulic or just hydraulic oil in my hydraulic system? I found the drain plug, but where's the fill plug/overflow? Also, what type fluid goes in the pulley gearbox? Thanks alot. aaron

I drained and cleaned out the hyraulic pump on my H last week. I put 6 quarts of non detergent 30 w oil in it --- we have mild weather here in the South. If you are in cold places, then the book recommends you go back to 20 or 10 w depending on OAT. The 6 quarts made the new 3 point hitch do full swing...so I quit filling...it might hold some more. I was told on this site to pour it in and if it were overfilled, it would come out the vent hole of the filler cap when you actuated the system....messy but no fowl--sounded like good advice to me so I started pouring.

CaseIH recomends hytran in the transmission for all the old tractors.

Hy Tran or hydraulic oil will be OK in the H transmission/rearend for light duty occasional use or winter use - you will experience more gear noise and when you push the clutch the gears will keep turning for a while...

I prefer 85W-140 for the rearend/transmission myself. Quiets down the gears and makes it go into gear sooner without grinding.

6 gallons in the transmission/rearend and 6 quarts in the belly pump.

The belly pump will hold 6 quarts of oil. Original specs called for non-detergent motor oil, 30wt for warm weather, 20 wt. for cooler weather. HyTran or its equivalent is perfectly acceptable. There is no check plug. Originnaly there was a dipstick that lived just under the fill cap. Mosy of them are gone, You don't need it. The belt pulley gear box uses the same gear oil that the transmission/rear end uses.

most everyone uses hytran in the hydraulic system non detergent oil works also. The fill neck is on the top of the torque tube. IT should be a large cap with a dip stick on it. Sometimes the ravages of time the dip stick will fall off. The belt pulley should use 90 wt grease.

So, was I incorrect to put transhydraulic oil in the transmission? It has only been in there for 1 week, so not a big deal to switch to 89-90maybe?

I would drain and go to 90wt or even 140. Use 30wt for the belley pump and you will have better results or just plain hy fluid. HY-TRAN was made for later stuff.

If you have no place to go with the transhydraulic fluid leave it rear end, I'd hate to see you waste it. It will be just fine lubricating the transmission of an H, it been doing the job in thousands of other similar gear drive transmissions like the 300 and 350.

Drain it and use 90W in the transmission, there is no advantage to the stuff you are using. Really no advantage to Hytran in the belly pump either, 30W non detergent is cheaper and may gine even more pressure than Hytran.
