I am not aware of any but there were limited numbers of the 766 made with gas engines. The 966 was made with the DT414 engine. If I am wrong, I would really like to know also--would be neat to see one.

I believe the early 966 came with a D414 engine - no turbo - and the later came with a D436 engine, still no turbo but more cubes...

Dunno,

I've heard that too, but I think it must have been just a few stragglers at the end of the run that might possibly have gotten the D436 just before they went into the 986s.

My blackstrip is a fairly late production 966, has the ID plate back on the lower right side. Still has the D414 tho.

One thing I'll never get used to is that higher high-idle speed on the later tractors. Just seems too darned fast! :>(

A farmer I worked for in ND had a late-model 966 with the 436 in it. Powerful bugger, and a fuel hog!

I agree on the engine speed, I like my diesels around 2100 RPM - always thought that maybe that was the reason the 806 diesel went 15000 hours before overhaul and the 1086 needed the OH at 7500 hrs...

My old 966 was about a '72 model. Seems to me that the thing ran in at about 1800?

Anyway, I then bought a 766 and it was at 2400; the later ones are higher yet at 2600.

I ran that old 9 for so darned long that the sound of anything over 1800 just plain sounds "wrong" to me.

I'm like you; I don't wind 'em up that tight. :>)

I know the DT436 in the 1460 combine runs 2850 wide open and the 1086 is right around that 2800 as well.

The 806 just sounded better.

Kinda like the older 18 wheelers that go around you on the interstate. Runnin' about 75 mph, and you could still just about count the strokes of that engine.

No. The 806, 826, and 856 were the biggest IH's avalible with a gas engine. The 766 was the biggest 66 series avalible with a gas.
