Pump noise?

I have a 364 I.H. and when I am lifting a heavy load sometimes the lift is strong enough that the front of the tractor will lift. Other times I can only lift a load about 3/4 of the lift arm travel and the pump makes a squealing sound and will not raise any further. This is while using a boom pole lift. The hydraulic oil is full and clean. It does this hot or cold. Any suggestions appreciated.

The noise you hear is likely your pressure relief valve since you only hear it when lifting a heavy load and when your steering strokes our either way. In either of these conditions, the pressure spikes in the system since this is a fixed displacement open center system and the relief valve opens to dump the oil back to tank. If the relief valve weren't there the pressure would rise instantly and bust a line or pump case, etc. If you have power steering, you have block between the drivers seat and the hyd. pump that is about 4" square by 1" thick. The relief valve screws into this block and is very easily removed. Take it out with the tractor not running and clean it up and inspect it. Not a big job - let me know what you find.

Sounds like either an inadegquate resevoir if the cylinders are one way, or a clogged filter/screen. An inadequate filter should make the noise and stop lifting at nearly the same level everytime, which isnt what you indicate. A clogged filter should be less likely to do this when the oil is warm and thinner. I would firast check the filter, altho that might be easier said then done, on my 300u, its a pita and I haven't gotten the gonads to start breaking off bolts in the resevoir cover. I did on one trying to get the toolbox off and said to hell with it, aint touched it since. I dont know much about your tractor, does it have an aftermarket loader plumbed into the stock hydraulics? Does it have power steering?

My 300u always makes pump noise, but the time I ran low on hydraulic fluid (would also happen is an inadequate resovoir was used) it sounded absolutely horrible like the damn pump was gonna fly apart, learned real quick to add oil when bleeding the system =). I'm not sure if you just got the tractor or what.

Generally when a pump seems to go bad it either gradually get noisier/less power to lift, or it just goes all at once. Intermittent pump operation seems pretty unlikely, tho not impossible. If you have power steering, there is a proportioning valve that can malfunction, but I just read about it and my first hand knowledge of symptoms to look for when this is the problem is limited. I'm sure others will chime in with better help, I'm just trying to do my best to help a guy out, I'm still learning.

THANKS for the suggestions. My filter is in-line on the return line, not too complicated to clean. When I got the tractor three years ago, I changed all the fluids and filters. I have remote hydraulics--not using-- and it does have power steering. The pump only makes this noise like I stated, but I failed to mention that I have the same noise when the tractor is at max turning, left or right, and pressure is exerted on the steering wheel. I have learned to ease off the steering wheel and the noise stops. The pump is stock engine mounted. I will clean the filter again.

Never hurts to clean the filter. If you"re getting the same sound when you turn the steering up against the stops you might want to check your bypass valve pressure and condition.
