Super A rear oil seal

I came across the rear seal retainer and a dim light bulb came on about it. I vaugely remember reading on this forum that it is a good idea to replace the retainer along with the seal.

What do you guys think, should I replace it or will I be OK reusing it with a new seal?

Thanks for the advice, I'll inspect it this morning. The photo is the Glyptal drying inside the block. I had to use lamps to keep the temperature high enough for it to cure.

Glyptal is the paint that is used on the inside of engines, cases, electric motors, etc. It has execellent adhesion and provides a slick surface for oil to return quickly to the oil pan. It seals the porous surface of the interior of the block. IHC used a red glyptal, but a friend gave me a gallon of black. At about $60 a quart, I'm not going to worry about the color.

I must say, one more benefit about painting the inside of your engine is how well you must clean it to insure the paint will stick. I got stuff out that I though the machine shop hot tank would have cleaned.
