How were the letters chosen for the letter series? The A,B,and C are logical. Why did they jump to H and M rather than use D and E?

Story I heard was that those models were prototypes that never made production. I have a picture in some book I have that shows a Farmall E. It looked like about the size of a C only without the offset seating. Steering shaft came right out in center, not off to side.

Gary: I don't believe you could call this TRIVIA. Trivia has answers, this doesn't.

Im just guessing but I think it was that the competation had already used those letters.

Either that or....

The war caused a lot of letters to be in short supply. Luckly there was plenty of H's and M's.

Can't answer your question, but at least they are in order. John Deere letter series give you no clue as to size.

Actually, starting with the "A", it is in order of development with John Deere. The D,C, and GP were earlier. They did skip a few to try to eliminate confusion.(or maybe add to it) For example the "G" was origionally going to be the "F" but some felt it was too close to the F series IH.

Still confusing when you had L, H, M, B, A, G, D, R in order of HP all produced at the same time.

You Farmall people are confused anyhow. ;) Seriously it is confusing, especially as manufacturers added models to fill gaps in the line up. Perhaps thats why everyone seemed to go with number systems, which gets confusing after a while too.

Judging by the serial number prefix, one has to wonder if the M was originally going to be the "K" (FBK prefix). Who knows????! mike

I dunno the answer. Why do some building not have a thirteenth floor?

In IH's case, they skipped the nine in the K and KB series trucks for obvious reasons. In addition to that, I think they also skipped thirteen. The largest truck was a fourteen.

I have only seen one KB-14 and it didn't seem very big. At least compared to Macks of the same vintage with deep section triple frames, 24" rubber, and big springs.

Unlucky? yes

Started because King Phillip of France had a bunch of the Knights Templar arrested on that date. At least thats the story I heard a long time ago.

Completely off topic about the letter series, more about other stuff..

Actually, there isnt a 13th floor because no one wants to work on it... Too much superstition, and then the owner of the building cant rent it to a tenant. So they just go from 12 to 14. Its the same reason there isnt a row #13 on an airplane.

I keep hearing people making this claim, but I have never actually seen a building where they skipped the 13th floor.

I've seen it in hotels. I also worked for about a year in a building that skipped the 13th floor. It is the Tower Life building in downtown San Antonio. It was built in 1929.

Those 2 letters are in DEERE? =P
But seriosuly, I have no idea, sometimes its nearly impossible to figure out why companies do them sorts of things. Im sure there was a reason...
