I have a 1951 M that has a four spoke steering wheel that looks original, does any body know about this? I would also like some info. on a 766 int. with black strip, are they good tractors that hold up good?

Is your M a narrow front or a wide front end?

It could have been from another tractor from around that time frame that did have a wide front if yours didnt... The extra spoke just gave you a little something extra to hang on to so you could turn the wheels. It sure was cheaper than adding power steering...

Don't know about the very early M's, the standard or wheatland tractors did have 4 spoke wheels, should bolt right on -- I say this without looking in my parts catalogs, so it's not etched in stone. Dunno about the 766, "good" depends more on the condition it is in now than the differences in models -- everyone will have their on opinion as to which tractor of that era was "best".

We bought a 706 new in 1967 and a 766 new in 1974.
We got rid of the 766 in 1996 and kept the 706 if that tells you anything.

We always had trouble with the 766's steering/front end. The cab seemed to have been engineered as an afterthought. The engine had to be rebuilt when it was about a year old with several hundred hours. It was under warranty, they said the rings had never seated properly.
I never had much experience with newer models, I believe they were better than the 66's. It just seemed to us that IH wasn't on the ball during that time period. Good luck, Gene
