Harry Lee (retired engineer from IH) built the two and three engine F's. I have seen both at Red Power Roundups when he was driving them. Quite a site!!!!!

Punch below for a shot of a triple F20 underway the 2003 RPR.

I don't know if IH built any twin engined tractors but I seem to recall that Euclid (?) marketed a crawler with two side-by-side 6-71 Detroits. This was before GM developed the 12V-71 found in alot of Euclid's later equipment.

Euclid indeed built and sold several series of crawlers (TC-12, 82-80, etc) with side by side 6-71 Detroit engines on a single set of tracks. A neighbor had a TC-12 set up as bulldozer for many years - worked hard it made enough noise to wake the dead!

Caterpillar also marketed two twin-engined versions of it's venerable D-8. The D-8 SXS (twin engines side by side on a single set of tracks). Also a pair of single engine conventional D-8's connected "elephant style" (nose to tail) and controlled from the lead unit.

Cool stuff!

In the same vein, the USMC used to run amphibious tractors (AmTracs, otherwise known as personnel carriers) with two flathead Cadilac V8's; one for each track. They were probably steered with a pair of gas pedals. Probably Korean War stuff. They were target practice for 3.5" rocket launchers (Basookas) when I served.

The concept of dual engines isn't dead. Jeep showed us a four wheel drive, four wheel steer, front and back V8 last year. Those concept people have too much time on their hands.

Wayne: If you search the archives you'll find discussion on the side by side Farmall 400s. I'm thinking around 2001-2002. It's also in the July-August 2002 edition of RPR. It was called the Garratt Twin Drive Tractor, built in Enumclaw WA. there were two of these built and patented by Garratt Manufacturing. The one in the RPR article is or was owned by an 80 year old guy in IN. I think there are photos of this in the YT gallery. Go to tractor photos and type in Garratt Twin Drive Tractor.

An outfit called Garrett assembled and marketed a small number of tractors assembled from a pair of 450 diesels arranged side by side in a skid steer configuration. Punch below for a shot of a Garrett on display at the Red Power Roundup in Bloomsburg PA several years ago.

I've also seen a few home-assembled F20 twins (and even a triple!), also a couple Farmall A (or super A?) twins. Cool looking but kind of impractical...

Bob: Between us we have it right, I mis spelled Garrett (Garratt) in my first post, however according to Red Power mag article the tractors were 400 diesels. Garrett Manufacturing patented the system that ties and makes the two work together.

My first thought was that it is a home shop built rig. I've seen a couple of those, but then I remembered an article in Red Power Magazine about a company that converted Farmall 400s or 450s into side by side twins. Don't remember all the details. Maybe someone else can provide some facts?

Even if they were done by a professional, they're still not factory. I'm reasonably confident in saying that IH never made a dual-engine farm tractor of any sort, whether side-by-side or front-to-back.

Missed that episode, but I seen in person the double F-20s, and the triple F-30s, but never had a chance to visit with the guy that built them. The dual 450s in the magazine were not built by IH. It was another company that built them, just don't remember the name.
