I am looking at a 1066 that is in great shape. New paint, in-frame engine overhaul and everything works great. He is asking 10k. Is this reasonable or should it be lower? 4110 hours

Also, what is the long cylinder on the right side of engine in this picture?

What is cylinder?

It has a really stiff clutch that he said has always been that way. Is that the same with all 1066 machines?

The long cylinder on the side of the engine is an oil cooler. It circulates the engine oil next to the coolent to cool the oil down. This went bad on my grandfaters 10 and oil got in to the radiator, it was a simple fix.

Is that 4100 hrs on the rebuild? Can't imagine a 1066 needing an overhaul with only 4100 hrs. Something not right here. But if it just had an overhaul, ask for the receipts, or talk to the mechanic that did the work. If it's an up and up deal they should be happy to tell you all the did (and didn't) do. If it had the complete overhaul it's worth the money.

Gordo,

That's the trouble when people let 'em set and don't work 'em. Those darned sleeve seals take a set, crack and get to letting the anti-freeze into the oil.

Since ya have to go in there anyway, ya overhaul 'em even if they only have low hours.

Allan,

That was exactly the case. He said it was the seals on the sleeves. Fluid was slipping by. Replaced sleeves, pistons, bearings, seals.

Also he put new seals on the steering cylinder, new injector pump, other things I can't remember off the top of my head.

We are going to look at it again Friday and take it for another spin. Anything else to look for while I am there?

Tim,

$10K is a heck of a lot of money for a tractor that old, but this guy obviously has taken very good care of this old beast.

I'd already have it setting in my yard if it were I. :>)

Tim,

I can see $600 worth of updates to that tractor's A/C system as well.

No noise in the rear and I tested all the gears, no noise or whines or anything. No leaks.

As far as I can tell the blinkers are the only thing that doesn't work. The fuel gauge bounced around so I don't know if it works or not.

Only reason the hard clutch worries me is this will be my dad's tractor and he is having both knees replaced this spring. How hard would it be to add the assist? He had a TIA so I want to keep him out of the sun in the AC :)

If I remember correctly, Dad and I added the assist to the 1256 in about 2 hours time. Only cost a couple hundred bucks, too.

It's worth the $$ if the rearend and transmission are quiet/in good shape. Clutch pushes hard on those if they don't have the hydraulic assist - you can add it later if you want, we put one from a 1066 on our 1256 and made a world of difference. The tube/cylinder is the oil cooler - oil comes in from the side and the coolant goes through the two tubes where it attaches in the front.

Cost us $6000 to have the DT-414 overhauled in our 1086 back in 1997...

Allan,

It is in the Durant, IA area. He says he put 4k in the engine alone for the rebuild.

The serial starts off with 261015 so I was thinking it was a 73.

The last digits are your serial number.

Tim,

If it indeed is what he says it is, then yes, it is for sure worth the $10K.

I built one from the ground up and in another 3 months I will have ended up with over $19K in the thing after all the dust has settled.

Good ones aren't cheap.

That tractor looks to be a 1972 and probably didn't have the power clutch slave on it. The clutch is gonna push hard.

Also, your tractor looks very familiar to me. Somewhere around the Grinnell area? :>)

Good looking tractor. If it's in as great shape as it sounds, it's probably worth that much. It's fun to dicker though. We had a 966 and it seems the clutch was stiff also.
