all this talk of new developments in engine technology... direct injection diesels...isnt a 1256 with a dt407 a direct injection diesel? that's a good 40 years of being around before being called a new breakthrough technology.
and why did they kill that block design off? all the crap and vandalism ours went through and still runs great....

Yes, the 407 was direct injected. The 361 which the 407 was based off of was the first direct injected engine IH used in a farm tractor, which would have been in 1963 in the 806. The 407 was last used in 1971 in the 1456. After that, they went to the 414/436/466 style engine and the old 361/407 was killed off. The old 361/407 was an exellent engine, but is complicated and expensive to work on compared to the 414/436/466. Not sure if the two-cylinder Deere diesels were direct injected, I know the 3010/4010 were in 1960. So yes, direct injection has been around in farm tractors for about 50 years. Today, most of the big high-tech farm tractor engines have four valves per cylinder and an injector is located in the center. All six injectors are fed low-pressure fuel through a common passage. The injector is operated off the camshaft through a pushrod/rocker arm. This action allows for injection pressures of over 20,000 psi. An electric soleniod controled by the computer controls the amount of fuel/timing by closing off/opening a passage between the injector and the fuel return passage. Compared to these engines, an old 407 looks pretty crude.

All Cummins and Detroit 2-strokes were Direct Injection Diesels, also the 3208 V-8 Cats.
And of course the later series Olivers. So the answer is; of course there were DI engines. But only recently have they begun to be as 'clean' as the Indirect injection engines. That is why VW and Mercedes had Precombustion chamber engines in their cars until the last few years.....

I'm not sure if it is a Direct Injection. However you'll find alot of rebranding and tweeks that make things a breakthrough. eck, Compact Dics came out in 79, didnt ya know? They just werent perfected and commercialized until 1982. There's alot fo technology out there that will be "re-released" in a few years from just minor tweeks.
