The only parts I will buy from an unknown person are those I cannot get new, or used from a reputable vendor such as Steel Wheel Ranch (only one example). Even then I will make darn sure the guy knows what he is talking about. He is apparantly one of many people who think the H through 350 use the same carb--or worse, he doesn't care. The buyer has to assume some responsiblilty and make sure the vendor knows what he is selling. There many 300 carburators around, so the guy was not a last resort.

Ken, I responded to this same message over on tractor talk. My e-mail is open. Depending on which carb you have, we could each benefit.

It's unfortunate people like this are out there. If he honestly did not know or wasnt sure he should have stated that. If I had mistakenly sold something like that I would refund the money, minus shipping and would not pay for return shipping. I believe that is fair, but if it did not come off of the machine that I said it would fit with the factory standard engine, I would say that up front. I would have also been more then happy to provide measurements to ensure its proper fitment.

Maybe with a few pics and/or numbers some of the members can help you identify the carb, and who knows, maybe one of us needs one. I know I dont, but someone out there is bound to.

Hope it turns out for the better, saying best is unrealistic at this point. =(

Why should the buyer pay for "you" shipping the wrong item. It is more then enough that he pay for returning it.

I believe it is part of the buyers responsibilty to ensure the item is the right item. If pictures were provided and measurements provided, what else can the seller do? If the item came off the tractor said, and it doesnt fit the other one, whose to say which is modified. I'm not talking in this case, I just mean in general. Casting numbers also help to verify identity. I would be content with getting most of my money back then no money at all. Nobody really wins in these situations. If it was a local exchange, of course a full refund would be in order.

Two sides on a coin in reply to Ken B, 12-21-2006 08:41:25
I have not had a bad experience working off this forum yet--it may happen tomorrow. I am sorry you have. On the other side of the coin, 99.999% of the guys I have met are 100% and by an example, I ran a note on here that I was looking for a shroud or a pattern to make a shroud for a I/H 3-5 HP engine.

I was contaced by a visitor to the forum who reported that he had one and it was installed on his engine. That I could come to his place, take the shroud off, take it home, copy it and return it....which I have done recently. (Thank you Kevin) I have the shroud on my work bench and I am carefully making a paper pattern from it. You must keep in mind that this young fellow did not know me from Adam's House Cat.

And on another occasion, I reported here that I had broken the cam gear on the engine I was rebuilding...a few days later one showed up in the mail and the sender refused to accept payment even for postage...saying, "I'm glad somebody will get use of it."

So, the bottom line for me is, continue to have faith even though a weed pops up in every garden.
