Should I be able to see power through my continuity tester when turning over the motor with my probe stuck in the top of my coil where the wire would normally come out which goes to the distributor?I am trying to troubleshoot a problem with my 404 tractor. I think the coil is bad. I checked it with a continuity tester when I turn the key to the on position and I have power to both posts. I am not getting power to my spark plugs and I have tested the generator, battery, voltage regulator, and coil.

As the others have said do not do it.
Iwth the Key on, use a test light on the wire attached to the side of the distributor. With it out of gear have some one crank the engine at least 5 seconds. The light should blink off and on. If it stays on, the points are not making contact. If it is off and stays of the points are shorted to ground (or closed so much that they stay shut). Clean the points with a fine emery board (Paper nail file) then wipe clean with a folded dollar bill. Adjust the point gap to .020" with the distributor cam pushing the rubbing block on the movable point so that the points are open as far as the cam will push them open (on the high point of the cam. Give us an update when you try this. JimN

I'd be careful. If the coil turns out to be good, you'll be exposing your test equipment to tens of thousands of volts -- enough to fry just about anything electronic.

Can you beg or borrow an inductive timing light? That would just clip around the wire. Good light would mean good spark -- at least in that portion of the wire.

GET THE CONTINUITY TESTER OUT OF THE HIGH-TENSION TOWER! If you DO get spark, the continuty tester will be "toast".

Using a 12-Volt test light on the PRIMARY coil terminal connected to the distributor, what does the light do while you crank the engine with the starter, key "ON"?
