Careful folks you may be hotter than you think-I just received two new temp gauges for my A and IA from OEM. Catalog and confer with them says these are the right ones. Have the C logo and no arrow. Out of curiosity I got out my wifes candy thermometer and a pot of water to check the color band temps. First test surprised me so I went out to the shop and got my digital thermometer. Here is what I find: both new gauges read the same. Off the peg at 100 F, bottom of white 120 F, top of white 160 F, top of green 210 F, top of red 240 F (4500' elevation so had to add antifreeze to keep it from boiling). Remember that these are measuring the temp comeing back to the engine-coolest water in the system. The old one with the rusty face reads 20 degrees cooler aross the dial. I for one will be calling OEM back. The point is that the water temp comeing out of the engine is a lot hotter than the gauge shows and you would be boiling water at about mid scale on this gauge-still supposedly "in the green".

Hi Roger,

Where is the temp probe located on your tracor? Can't imagine IH placing it in cold water?

Allan

All of the A, AV, B, BN, and IA's had the C-113 engine with the temp probe location in the water inlet at the bottom front of the engine comeing in after being cooled by the radiator. They did not have a water pump or a thermostat. Water circulated by convection, in at the bottm of the engine heated and then out at the top. Called Thermosiphon. The water comeing out at the top could be 30-40 degrees hotter than the inlet temperature, if not more due to load. So-these gauges could be mid-scale in the green arc and you might think all is OK when it is not, water at the top would be boiling. The Kerosene engines say to use the shutter to heat up to the arrow near the top of the green-that would actually mean the COOLEST temp would be above 200 F. Way too hot!!!!!

Top of green at 210, from your post seems good. For a non-pressurized system at sea level, the boiling point would be 212F. for each pound of cap pressure the boiling point goes up about 4 degrees F. The specs seem OK to me. JimN

Ja, Ordinarily I would agree, IF, the temp gauge was at the water outlet of the engine as it is in later pressure systems with a water pump etc. it would be correct. I just received a call back from OEM and, per Thurman(sp), the gauges they sell are new from Rochester-but-the scale is NOT calibrated the same. Correct calibration for the Thermosiphon, non pressurized, inlet side gauge IS 20 degrees cooler at the color band markings. He is going to check with Rochester to see if he can get them to re-calibrate that part number gauge. More as I get it.
