I wouldn't be scared of the 986 at all. We had a 1486, same engine, that had 15500 hours on it. We did overhaul it at 10500, only because a fuel line broke and it started on fire while agitating manure. That 1486 had the hardest 15500 hours on it. It was on a mixer wagon from October until May, starting everyday, twice a day regardless of temp. The coldest morning I remeber getting it going was -48 out, hydraulics are little slow then, but that is to be expected. The tractor was also used as the primary tillage and seeding tractor in the spring, ran a haybine all summer on 2000 acres of alfalfa, chopper, and fall tillage. When we traded it off, it was wore out. The oil pressure was never high on it either, but never burned oil. The front end was rebuilt 2 times, 6 clutches, one overhaul on engine, 4 hydraulic pumps, 3 different shift forks, a new seat, A/C converted, and tires was about all we ever did with it. We bought it with 500 hours on it in 1987 and traded it this spring. I think they are tough tractors.
