I am a first time tractor owner, and I just pulled the magneto off my H to fix an oil leak in the engine side cover. Does anyone know of an easy way to find top dead center so I can reset the timing?

When you take the mag off just remember where the rotor was when you removed it and then dont turn the engine over and you can replace with the rotor pointed the same position and there wont be any problems. When the engine is on tdc the mag will be hard to replace as it will be loaded to snap and fire and hard to replace. I like to pull them after they have just fired makes it lots easier as you cant be wrong.

My owners manual for my H says to find top dead center on cylinder #1 remove the spark plug and hold your thumb over the hole. Then have someone turn the engine over with the crank slowly until you feel pressure. On the left side of the engine is a pointer and continue cranking slowly until the pointer lines up with the first notch on the engine flywheel. You have top dead center.

HOLD ON!!
The first notch on the pulley is ADVANCE TIMING.
Top dead center is the double set on notches.
Just remember, timing advances when the engine is running so the "advanced timing" mark will go past the timing pointer first, followed by the TDC marks.

The crankshaft pulley has a TDC mark, there should be a pointer on the left side of the tractor near the governor.

You'll have to pull #1 spark plug and feel for compression as you crank it to make sure it's on the compression stroke and not exhaust.
