These generator systems have been around for over 50 years & parts are still available. Check solder joints & small wire connections inside the regulator also.

If this was a better system design, it would be alot easier to have patience and determination. A solid state regulator to control field current would be awesome. I see why alot of people due the 12v alternator conversion. Up until about 6 months ago, I had some 12v batteries with nothing to do. Now that I'd have to go buy a battery, it kinda puts me off. I dont like spending money, especially on something that could go terminal anytime. If I had a better assesment of the condition of the hydraulic pump, the engine, and the clutch/rearend, Then dumping more money into it wouldnt be a problem. The idea of spending money and having onme of those go out, is not my idea of a good investment. i know, I'm cheap

Thanks man. I will probably try those things tomorrow. It is supposed to be nice the next couple of days, so I dunno, I might be running my R/C all day. I will defintely check the reg ground. It does have the ground strap from the regulator to the mount, because its rubber mounted. The mount iitself might be the culprit. On a side note, I'm doing pretty well. My car ha been leaking oil between the engine and tranny, tall tell sign of a bad rear main seal. It's an 89 grand prix. I've replaced them without pulling the motor before, So I was gonna try it on this engine. Well since It's a v6, the exhaust pipe beteen the 2 manifolds needs to come off, but I cant because the studs wont come out , and It would be a major PITA to pull off the front manifold as there is alot of crap in the way of it. I got to looking around and seen alot of oil on the top. I was like what the heck. Well my car has coilpacks, but the block still has a distributor dummy shaft to run the oil pump. Well looky there, when I run the engine, oil nearly shoots out from it. The seal is bad!! Hopefully it lowers my quart a week oil hog of a car. It sure has to help. The oring was flat as a pancake. Just got the parts, time to put her back together. So if this works, then I dont have a main seal problem, which is AWESOME!! So needless to say, let the tractor battery charge for now, I'll work on her later. My car does 55 and has a heater, the tractor doesnt =)
