Allen, just was wondering if you could help me out with a few things on swaping a hydraulic pump. You have been really helpfull on my past dilema's. I am trying to learn how to work on my own equipment & have limited knowledge on "mechanics", but I am slowly picking things up from this great board & its members. I have a 51 M that I am replacing the pump (as you may remember from my previous recent posts). Last week the pump split in half on me & I have a new one on its way. A couple of months ago the pump started to slowly leak, so it was just a matter of time with it's demise. Finally it went south on me while moving snow from the two recent blizzards in WY.
The pump is an IH pump (#128190C91) & the hoses feed into the bottom of it. It is a live hydraulic pump that is next to the distributor. I started to taking everything off to replace the pump when it gets here. Everything has went good so far (& even found some things that I need to replace like my distrtibutor cap). The question that I had so far was, when I took my hydraulic pump off it appears that the "idler gear" is attached to it. Would this be correct? If so, I am assuming I need to take it off & put it on the new one.
Please email me & if you would like, I can get you some pics of the kind of pump I have & what everything looks like. I really appreciate your help for this "novice".

Hold the phone!

Did you mark the distributor housing as to it's relationship to the housing, then pull the distributor cap and mark the relationship of the rotor to the distributor housing?

If not, you are going to have to totally re-time that bugger and it makes the change a lot harder.

If you're getting a new pump, you'll probably have to swap that driven gear over to the new pump. If you are getting a used pump, however, it will more than likely still have the gear on it.

Also, you are gonna need those two housing gaskets.

allen, are those pumps rebuildable? i have one that i got at a sale awhile back, but it is missing the lower bracket that connects the hoses to the pump body. i dont know if the pump is good or not, and i'm planning on using it on a super m i'm rebuilding. can you open them up and replace seals ect?

I pitch 'em.

Steel gears in an aluminum body, guess what part wears. :>)

glennster,

It's my understanding that the pumps are NOT rebuildable. What happens is the shaft wears down at the seal, so a new seal will not hold. No parts other than seals are available, only whole pumps. Otherwise, it would be trivial to replace the shaft with a new one. The alternative is to have a machine shop build the shaft back up with weld, then turn it down to original spec.

glennster, If the pumps are rebuildable, let me know & you can have anything that is salvagable off of my old split one.

This Allen is GOOD! Talk about a quick (greatly appreciated) response!
No need to worry, from my previous posts, I did learn to FIRST mark the distributor housing & rotor, so I wouldn't have to re-time it.
The pump will be a brand spankin' new one, so I will have to transfer that driven gear over from the old to the new.
So far in the disassembly, the only gasket that I ran into is the one located between the hydraulic pump itself & (sorry to sound stupid, don't know technical name of it)where you put the oil in. Where would I put the other gasket at? This may have been one of the contributing factors on why the pump split with the other missing gasket & the fluid leak.
I will start trying to remove the driven gear off of the old pump tonight. I should have the pump in a couple of days & will probably be calling out for your help again. Them pumps are not cheap, but at this point I probably would of paid twice as much as I gave for it so I can get some snow removed. Once again thanks for everything.

if your new pump is off the same type of machine when the new pump arrives you should instantly tell, it will have the drive on it or it wont, count the teeth measure the thickness and if they are the same width amount of teeth it should work problem solved just my 2 cents.
