On My 1952 Super M I just did a brake inspection and replaced the right brakes ( there Drum Brakes). I noticed the Oil seal on the left brakes seems to be leaking. What is the easist way to replace the oil seal? Do I need to take the Transmission apart to fix it? David Goode, Coggon IA

you can replace the seal by removeing the brake drum, just take the nut loose and pull off. Then you will have to get ahold of the old seal and pull it out. then press in the new one. The sealing serface is on the brake drum so you will have a bit of room. Becarefull of the wooddruff key as it will be loose and you dont want to push that into the transmition when reinstalling the drum.

If you have drum brakes ask for seals for a M tractor bcause the original SM used disc brakes. Also only early M used a key on bull pinion and brake shaft for the drum, most are splined. Don't try to remove housing the seal is in from tractor from the outside. Parts need removed on inside first or housing will break.

Sorry, The Tractor does have Disk brakes. I always get that mixed up, is it still a proccess where I don't need to open up the Transmission?

No problem, remove the brake adjusting bolt then 5 bolts in cover and remove. Slide brake shoe from splines and seal is there in plate inside shoe rubs agianst. If you look for a parting line between plate and housing that supports differential and bull pinion you can find some slots to pry plate out. It has a snout to inside with a oring around it so most times it comes out kind of hard. When you get plate off seal is in it. Another way that I use sometimes is rig up a slide hammer to screw in the 5/8 fine threads in end of bull pinion shaft and bring shaft and plate out togeather. shaft will slide right back in if wanted. Most places can match up the seals. If you need a new oring they are high from IH now. Used to get them from one local bearing supplier but they moved out of state and haven't had much luck finding them since.

And if your seals have been in there long enough to be the original style the new ones will be different. They're about half as thick. A lot of people get two and put them both on; I did. Some other people say that it's a waste because the outside one won't get any lube and will quickly wear out. My thinking was that if the inside one didn't seal well the outside would give me another chance not to have to do it over again. And compared to doing it over again they're cheap. Getting the old one out can be a pain.
Good luck, Wm
