Alway hearing of torque amplifier problems on these Farmalls. What is the main problem that causes them to fail? What is the correct way to use them when operating the tractor to prevent them from failing? Is their a maintenace procedure to follow? Thanks

The main cause of failure is age, simple wear and tear. Most of the mechanical TA tractors are pushing 50 years old, on their original or second TAs, and have tens of thousands of hours on them.

They're just plum wore out!

Improper usage and lack of regular adjustment will shorten a TA's life, and if it's really out of adjustment or someone yanks back on the lever going downhill to hold a load back... Yeah you can really do some damage.

Both the owner's manual and the I&T service manual have very precise adjustment procedures in them for TA and clutch adjustment. Regular adjustment, and using the TA properly will result in many years of service.

If you replace the TA in your typical collector/show/hobby-farm tractor, you'll NEVER use it enough to wear the TA out in your lifetime.

I am second owner of a 1957 farmall 350 diesel it has the original TA still in it and it works perfectly. However I do not let any one else operate this old girl for for that reason. Most TA failure is due to operator difficulty.

I will agree with operating them properly, keeping them adjusted ,leads to a long trouble free life. The weak part of them usually in the overrunning clutch. The clutch rollers, ramps ,planet carrier etc. wears in time causing failure.

Johnny: Nothing wrong with TA, most of the problem was people. IH should have designed a device that gave everyone who didn't read and heed the manual, a belt on the head as they stepped into the operators seat of a TA equipped tractor.

I'll also give you another fact. Most of the folks the critize TA have never owned, been on or operated one. The folks that have actually buggered one up, usually never say anything, they've finally read the book, and are too ashamed to admit what they did wrong. Then of course you have that group not smart enough to know what they did wrong.

Get the manuals and read them. There must currently be a dozen threads on TA in the present 16 pages of discussion here at YT. There is a 1,000 more threads in the archives. There is enough material in there to keep you reading for a year. Only one subject that has been discussed more than TA, and that is Farmall H hydraulics.

Seems like I read somewhere that IH tried an electric shift for the TA, but it didn't go over well with customers.

Dave: I bought 3 new tractors with TA and 2 others under 2,000 hours with a farm. All 5 tractors came from the same dealer, one 00 series, one 40-60 series, one 04-06 series, one 56 series and one 66 series. They never made me aware of any electric shift, Maybe I led a sheltered life. The dealer did know I was happy with what I had, thus there was no point in telling me more.

I think these TAs break mainly because people don"t know how to use them properly. When going from direct to low, the machine shouldn"t be free wheeling....such as driving on a road and using the TA to slow down the tractor. And always go from low to high and back in a swift manner with no stopping or slow down in between.

Our 350U (1957) gets used the most of any tractor we own and it has the original TA and it is fine. Whisk the handle backwards like you were ejecting from a burning F14. Put it forward like you were shifting to second in a Funnycar. Don't just let it spring, but as close to that as possible. The answer is that the ones that fail are either moved slowly, or left to rot. JimN

I agree with Jim,

Use the darned thing; that is what it is on there for.

They don't fail nearly as often as folks would have you believe. Actually, they are just pretty darned tough.

Keep them properly adjusted and don't use them for a brake.

We have a 1961 460 and my brother has a 1969 856 that have the orginal TA's.
