I was working on a small project - brain flatulance here as I can"t remember what it was - suddenly, one of the wood blocks split at a 45 degree angle length wise. It was a good thing I had more than one support. After looking at the block, I couldn"t see any evidence of what would appear to be cracking, it just gave way. Now, I ALWAYS use iron! Appears you like red iron as you have a red car (red iron used carelessly by me here), red mower and red cabinet/stand, even a spot of red on the lawn chair. You shared some great pictures with us-the light overcast provides nice even light on the subject and detail in the shadow areas - GOOD JOB! And "Tinker", I really like that. Enjoy!

I keep a set of old plugs just to use when I'm painting. One of them had masking tape on it.

Anyone that's thinking about splitting a tractor
should copy these pictures to show how you have blocked up the tractor with heavy blocks. Also to show the hoist that you used to handle the heavy pieces from the tractor. Hal

More questions in reply to kfox, 01-03-2007 21:02:37

I see a what looks like a leftover frame rail in this last picture. Is the engine out of another H?
And those two blocks on the side that look like they're holding up the engine; how are they attached to the block?
Thanks, Wm

The frame rails in the backround were the origionals from this tractor. They were in really bad shape. The bolster mounting holes were elongated from being run with loose bolts for many years. The rails on the tractor are off of my parts tractor, also a 1941. The two blocks on the top of the rail are the engine mounts. I hadn't slotted the mount holes in the frame rails yet. The engine is out of a 1951 H. and the mounting holes didn't match up. This H in the picture still had the rubber engine mounts. The cast iron blocks are the newer style mounts thet replaced the rubber ones. ken

I "kinda" went through the engine. I was in the 51 H with the 9 speed transmission that I bought last year. It was stuck when I got it. The only damage was the sleeves were badly pitted. I found a good set of used sleeves in the boneyard. This engine has the 8000 ft. high altitude pistons, and rotocap valves. The crank had .002 oversize bearings, and checked out OK. Plastigauge gave me .003" clearence on the mains & rods, so I put new .003 rod bearings, and cam bearings in.
I had it running yesterday evening (for about 30 seconds), and the oil pressure was almost pegged on the gauge. I don't think I would send this tractor to the field to plow all day. but since I named it "Tinker", its OK for playing around with. ken
