Sound of an IH inline six

We own a 460 with a C-221 and an Oliver 1555 with a 232 inline six and both are strait piped.
Why does the 460 sound so different from the Oliver? The C-221 sounds almost like a V-8 while the 232 sounds like any other inline 6. So why do the International engines sound so different?

I have a white 2-70 with a inline 6. Just last week I was looking at a IH 966 and did notice the differance in the sound of the two motors.I also wondered what would make two 6 cly diesels sound so different? As a side note. I did buy the 966.My first IH.

The exhaust notes of engines of similar displacement and number of cylinders is primarily a function of exhaust manifold design. Also perhaps to exhaust port geometry - though to a lesser extent.

Case in point: Years ago we had a pair of Continental F226 flathead sixes on irrigation pumps. One had the exhaust stack connection to the manifold located between #1 and #2 cylinders. The other�s stack connection was taken at the center of the manifold - ie. between #3 and #4 cylinders.

The first one�s exhaust sounded somewhat similar to a V8 engine � it had a distinct �beat� to it. The other�s note was smoother � every exhaust pulse sounded the same.

Similarly old gas truck engines can have different exhaust note depending on whether equipped with center or end exhaust pipe connections, also whether single or split (dual exhaust) manifolds. The big 50�s era White flatheads and Brockway Continentals come to mind.

I was thinking it had something to do with the manifold I just wasnt sure. I does make sense now the Oliver's exhaust exits through the middle of the manifold while the 460's exits between the number 1 and #2 exhaust ports.
