Hey guys, I see John T is active this morning and I have a question. I am working on a 1963 Rover car which has 12 volt positive ground. I have a Mr gasket electronic fuel pump I wish to use but it says negative ground only. My question is if I wire it Pos to Pos and Neg to neg and mount it so that it is insulated from the frame and use rubber hoses will the gasoline itself ground the pump and cook the electronics?
Thanks for any help. Karl

Karl - Your idea should work fine! Gasoline is a very good insulator - it will not ground the pump.

Just make sure the pump base well insulated from ground and that the fuel hose you use does not have wire reinforcement embedded in it.

Keep in mind also any exposed metal pump parts will be electrically "hot" whenever the pump is running. Recommend covering the exposed metal on the pump with suitable insulation in case it is accidentally contacted by a grounded metal tool, etc.

(Sorry for stepping in ahead of you here John T!)

Bob M, glad u beat this to the punch (I been doing law work plus theres some fun legal chat over on the tool board) cuz Id still have a lil heartburn on this one lol

Ok those electric fuel pumps are surelyyyyy yy permanent magnet motors right????? meaning they (unlike our electromagnetic field starter motors) are polarity sensitive as far as direction of rotation is concerned WE AGREE SO FAR

I AGREE that by insulative mounting methods an external to tank pump can still be wired n work fine

HOWEVERRRRR RRRRR his question and the use of that pump is just something that would make me nervous..... ..... ....

I guess its my legal training and my love of disclaimers cuz Id answer YES it will work BUTTTTT T Im NOT recommending it lol lol

Take care now Bob, wish we could meet at some tractor show n talk lectricity sometime?? Im givin Seminars at the New York Two Cylinder Expo July 07 and again at gathering of the Green in Moline in 08, stop by n see how us JD gents talk tractors lol stay away from all that red stuff it will stunt ur growth

John - My experience with old style electric fuel pumps is limited to one we stuck on an old Case combine years ago. It was a reciprocating pump - worked like the old engine-mounted mechanical pump only the pushrod was stroked by a solenoid and set of points. I cannot recall now whether it was polarity sensitive.

As you point out if the pump field magnet is polarity sensitive the pump will not work right with the polarity reversed. OR the coil may have a clamping diode across it to control transients and arcing when the pump contact points open. The clamping diode then would make it polarity sensitive too.

But these are just guesses....

Despite my "red" (Farmall) roots I hope to visit the NY 2 Cylinder Expo this July and take in one of your seminars. It's a great show; I hope to meet you there!

Thanks Bob. This site has to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Only trouble is that I spend more time at the computer than in the tractor shed. Karl
