I was putting new plugs in my super c and one plug would not tighten up . and when I started it up it blew it out so I need to find a way to keep it in. would a helicoil work and what size does it use ?would I need to take the head off also ? or would the head be junk .

Would a high powered telescoping pen magnet work to get those shavings out?? Just wondering

roll the motor around till the exhaust valve opens on that cylinder, take the muffler off, wrap a rag around your air hose and blow compressed air in there 20-25 psi should do it, when you tap the hole for the heli-coil, the compressed air will blow the chips out of the motor. wear saftey glasses so you dont get the chips in yer eyeball.

After doing it this way, I would put about a cup full of oil in the cyl & start it with the plug out. Don't stand too close. If a chip or two did get in the cyl, the oil will keep it from scoring and also should flush them out.

You could also find a huge huge crane and hold the tractor upside down wihile u retap it for the helicoil.

In all seriousness tho, removing the head is the BEST way to do it, but allans idea might be better then nothing. You could also fill the cylinder with antifreeze afterards until it come out of the plug hole, that should carry away most of the shavings, be sure to drain the fluid out before u fire her up tho, hydrolocking an engine is not a good thing to do =)

Simple procedure. Just Heli-coil the darned thing. Shouldn't take over 30 minutes.

Don't want to disagree with anyone, but do it DRY and while on the tractor. Then, just before you screw the plug in, use compressed air to blow out all the filings. Use a blowgun like this one in the picture to get the air inside the cylinder.

If you use oil, the shavings will stick to that oil and will never come out causing trouble.

Allan, the reason I use oil is because the shaveings float on the oil and if you have it close to TDC and but just down a little the shaveing come out first and will never make it down to the bottom, unless of course you wait hours before turning the engine over. I got that from a retired machine shop guy that told me never use air as it will push the shaveing down the sides of the piston and in and around the rings

Do as Allen said.....I would turn that piston to the top of its compression stroke with both valves closed first..... .Don

Don't remember the pitch off hand, but the plugs have a metric thread, 18mm. If someone doesn't post it today, when I get back later I'll check mine for the thread pitch.

It's 18mm x 1.50 pitch.

Your post got me thinking of why I DO NOT WANT THE FORD TRITON 6.8 L V 10 IN MY NEXT RV. They (and even the smaller 5.4 I read) are bad to blow spark plugs right out the threads, they use aluminum heads n only have a few threads to hold them plugs (Darn Fords lol). Some re tap them without removing the heads n glob grease on the tap to try n catch shavings but Id be afraid of that myslef.

John T (NOT a Ford lovin kinda guy, prefer the old reliable 460 in RV's, they break exhaust manifold bolts and the water pumps are a *&^%$ to change, but DO not leave ya stranded with blown out spark plugs)

Apparently, Dorf fixed that problem. Supposedly, engines built after a certain date (in 2003, possibly) have steel inserts in the heads from the factory, and use an UNUSUALLY small spark plug, which requires a 9/16" deepwell sparkplug socket, rather than the typical 5/8" socket.

Any good auto parts store will have heli coil sets just for spark plug holes. Also ALL spark plugs use a national standard for the base sizes, so if you tell them what spark plug you use they will be able to then match up the heli coil set you need to use. Its better to put a heli coil in a head with it off the engine because of metal shaveings going into the cylinder but if you put some oil in that cylinder before you start and then turn the engine over with the plug out the oil will push out 99% of the shaveings

Had a helicoil in a 350 chevy one time it worked good for a while, then when i changed the plugs later on the helicoil broke somewhere about half way when i screwed the new plug in dont know if it was the heat that got to it or just a bad application of me putting it in anyways i didn't catch it and it ate the cylinder walls and rings up something terrible as numerous as heads are i think i would replace it,IF it was mine to save a whole engine but its what ever the owner wants, just my 2 cents

Why wouldn't you put the cyclinder at TDC for that position then insert the helicoil? Seems to me at TDC less chance to lose shavings down deep and should be easy to "blow out" with an airgun. I vote "dry". Still, I'd hate to score a cylinder with metal shavings should I not get them all out.

I myself would probably just pull the head and do it that way, but that is more work and additional cost.

That's what I would do is to pull the head. I would have helicoils installed in the 4 plug holes. I had one installed in a big Toro mower
cost $12.00. They have all the tools and taps. Hal
