Just completed an overhaul on a 756 with german 310 diesel. After turning the engine over for a total of several minutes, I still have no oil pressure. It has the external oil pump that is much higher than the oil pan. Any suggestions on how to prime the system?? Is priming usually necessary for the external pumps? Thanks in advance for any help.

Whenever I have an oil pump apart, I pack it full of engine assembly grease. On rebuilt engines, I prelube them using an old metal tank that holds a couple gallons of oil. It has an air fitting brazed to the top, and a hose coming off of the top that screws into one of the main oil gallery holes. I use a regulator to keep the air pressure down around 40 psi. Once I have done all of this, I install a mechanical guage into the oil gallery plug, crank it for a while to bleed to fuel system, start it up, and I always have full pressure within two seconds.

I just have to ask this, is the oil filter full ? ie will the engine build pressure until the filter fills up ?

I would pull the pump and set it in a container of clean engine oil and then rotate the drive gear
until oil is being discharged, then reinstall the pump. If you have a small electric pump you can pump clean oil into the oil gallery so all the bearings and rockers are being lubricated during the initial startup. Hal
