I posted a week or so ago about the seal leaking on the Steering and was told a temp fix was to put cornhead greese in there. I did get the greese but I may just go ahead and replace the seal if it isnt to much trouble.

In the parts cat. it is on page 178 and part #7 (oil seal).

So you have to take the nut and retainer off the end of the steering column and then what? Does the column just slide out or do you have to screw it out because of the worm shaft?

After I get it out it looks like the end (because of the worm gear) would be to big to slide the oil seal off so I guess you have to remove the steering wheel and take it off that way then slide the new one down the shaft?

Just wanting to see how much trouble this is going to be where I can decide what to do.

While the steering shaft is out you mite also want to replace the bushing that is behind the seal. Also if the bearing on the end of the steering shaft is loose i would replace it too as it can reduce the play in the steering wheel. Center punch the shaft so your puller will center on the shaft to pull the steering wheel.

I have had the steering wheel off within the last two months so it should come off pretty easy. Dont have a puller, I used a block of wood and a hammer last time. A puller would sure make it easier, maybe Ill get one.

I will check the bearing and bushing for sure. There isnt any play in the steering so I think its all good.

What I want to know tho is the stearing shaft going to just slide out after I get the nuts off or am I going to have to force it out, or twist it out? I dont want to be banging on it thinking its the old seal holding it in there when Im actually breaking off the worm gears.

I know Ill probly find all it out when I get in there but I like to be prepared.

Gene, got that other seal fixed on the axle. I had to get my tractor guy to bring his cherry picker but it went smooth. Cleaned the brake band off and everything else and now I even have brakes again.

Working on the seal of the side pulley. Ordered one from Case, cost $24.00 and was half as thick as the old one. I decided to put two on there and ordered another one from a car parts place since I had the seal number. The same seal from there cost $5.00

yes the new seals are thin and sometimes there is room for two. I get all mine from CAR QUEST as he is close and has overnite servise 6da a week. You will probably need a socket to remove the big nut on the front. Then the shaft will screw out forward. I have a bushing driver set to remove smaller ones but have found thqat different sizes of PVC pipe and even pipe couplers come in handy for removing and replacing seals pluss i have a lathe .

the shaft will slide out once you twist it past the worm gear. No hammer required. make sure the tires are straight when you remove the shaft so it will be even when you reinstall it.

you have to remove the steering wheel and the shaft screws out the front. it looks harder than it is.
