My brother and I are restoring an m and want to convert to live pto and Hyd. Having trouble finding info and sourcing parts. Anyone point us in the right direction or have any tips? Just ordered enough engine parts for 70 to 80hp. Have to make decision on clutch and hyd soon. Any help would be app.

Re: Pinion Shaft Movement in reply to S/C Bob, 01-13-2007 05:16:18
I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I believe that the pinion is held in by the cover that goes on the outside. I think the outer part of the cover extends over the outer bearing race and holds the bearing in place. It's the same as on a Super A, etc. If the shaft is rubbing on the cover, perhaps the bearing is worn enough to allow shaft end play.

How do you plan on the live PTO unless you use the M&W set-up. The live hy is not hard to do as DAD had two Ms with the live pumps and never did change the cam gears used them for 20pluss yrs without problems. Heavy field work with that kind of HP mite cause problems better get some duals.

I think there's a good chance you're going to bust out your tractor's rear end with that much horsepower. You are going to have to be very careful applying the power. Also, very lucky.

You cannot add true live PTO to an M without some serious custom modifications, or the rear half of a Super MTA, 400, 450, or 560.

There is the M&W "hand clutch" which gives you the ability to stop the tractor without pushing the clutch and stopping the PTO, but it"s not real live PTO. You still need to push the clutch to shift, and when you do, the PTO stops.

M&W no longer makes the unit, and they don"t make parts either. Fully-functional units not already installed on collector tractors are RARE, nearly impossible to find. Ones on junk tractors are more common, but usually broken or siezed. Plus, I don"t know how well it would deal with 70-80HP...

NAT - The M&W LPTO clutch struggled with 35-40 HP during heavy tillage....70-80 is WAY beyond it's capabilities. The suggestion of looking for a 400/450, maybe even a 560 is a good one.

Thanks Nat that is the info I was looking for. I had heard of the M-W system but could not find info, none of them around here (N.S.,Can.) that I know of . Guess we"ll go with a good HD clutch, and leave the live work for the Cockshutts. We,ll keep ya all posted on build progress.

Johnny Red, The basic rule of LPTO on this subject is....NO! Cheaper to find a wrecked out SMTA or 400/450 and use the rearend! Though with unnlimited funds anyting is possoble. The Live hydrolics is a different matter there are older conversion out there. I have an old 1940 m with a Balen PS and Distribitor driven pump. So puruse Ebay and those items can be obtained easily enough. I personally would start looking for a 400/450 for it is essentially what you are looking to build. They are cheaper and haven't gotten outragious in price. So leave your old M somewhat orignal. Good Luck.
Later,
John A.

Being on the west coast, I will offer some thoughts and others can add tomorrow. I suggest searching the archives as the topic is well covered. Typical issues are matching mounting holes in the cover plate with holes on the pump. The holes late model M's may work. The timing gears under the cover plate on older M's generally need to be replaced with newer stronger gears. And another thought, if you are going to work the tractor in the field, the drive train probably won't handle that much horse power.
