Question about putting new brake band on an M?

I'm going to put new brake bands on my M soon and have a couple of questions. The flat pulley (don't know the name of it) that the brake bands ride on is rough. How smooth do they need to be? I can take them to work and put them on the lathe and touch them up, but hesitate to do that. They are just a little rougher than what a brake drum is after you turn them. Anything else I should do besides put new seals in while I have it pulled apart. This is my first time messing with the brakes.

One problem with turning the brake drums may be that you end up that the new brake bands are too long. I put new brakes on an I-6 (same as an M). Things had to be adjusted quite a ways farther than I expected to get the pedal travel where it needed to be. If I had turned down the drums, I might have been near the end of the adjustments. If the drums are reasonably smooth, I would not mess with it. If you decide to replace the pinion seals, see my post below. Also, be sure to get the gasket that goes under the washer on the end of the pinion shaft. The washer retains the drum on the shaft. If you don't put that gasket in there, the oil will leak around the shaft splines.

Expanding messages only takes 3-5 seconds for me. It takes 45 seconds between posting and message posted . About the same from 'preview' to 'post'.

Keep in mind that a tractor does not ever achieve the same speed that a car does, so some of the rules that apply to brakes on a car or truck really do not have to be heeded with a tractor. Also, if you turn too much off the drum trying to make it smooth, the drum will then be too small and you will not be able to get full adjustment on those new brake bands. I think I would just install new oil seals and put 'er back together.

If the seals arent leaking dont fool with them. You have to pull the differntials to change them, unless you are good with a seal puller, or they have already been repalced with the new style seals.Ive never turned down a drum on any of my Ms.

You do not have to pull the differential to change the pinion seals on an M. The seal runs on the brake drum hub, not on the shaft. Once the brake drum is off, there is plenty of room to get in between the shaft and the seal to remove it. If the original thick seals are still in there, it can be a bit of a chore, but certainly easier than taking apart the transmission. To get the part out(pinion shaft and bearing cage) that contains the seal, you have to pull the axles out of the bull gear and drop the bull gear down, as the bull gear runs in a slot in the pinion cage.

Hi, I have had to do my 856 a couple of times already. I am not that big but it seems to need it about every 6 or 7 thousand hours. My IH dealer has had all the parts I needed. Has anyone found good seat cushions and arm rests? The ones I have been buying only last a year or 2 if I am lucky. Chuck

They are brake drums, and they should realitivly smooth. Just make sure everything is as clean as possible, and you should have no problems. Good Luck.
